I just tried to measure one of my axle bolts. Everything suggests that it's a 5/8-11 UNC. The issue I ran into is that my cheapo Harbor Freight die is wobbly on the bolt and the tap doesn't screw into the axle either.
The bolt measures 0.613" which is about the right amount under 5/8" (0.625) that I'd expect. For whatever reason, the tap doesn't start easily and I'm not going to mess up the axle trying to go further. It doesn't come close to any common metric size so I'm 99% sure it's not.
The axles and those bolts are plentiful as new-old-stock parts. Berlin Bob had an axle and both bolts for sale on Bookface a day or two ago. I'm sure he has more available.

It's 5/8-11 unc, I pulled a bolt and ran a nut up on it. Factory used way to much loctite on everything, that should not be necessary. 16 mm x 2 would be a close metric thread, slightly larger but finer pitch by approx 1/64" every thread.
