Title: Fuel pump removal
Post by: dantebo on May 03, 2024, 08:18:10 AM
It looks like my fuel pump is not working. No sound when ignition is turned on. I?ve removed the tank and snap ring but can?t get the pump out. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

I seem to recall having to use a pair of pliers on mine to grab the fitting on the bottom and gently twist back and forth to break the seal. Once it starts moving you can work it up an out. A complete rebuild kit including the oring seal is available from EHparts.net if you need it. Let us know how you make out.

and here's a little insiders trick.
middle of the bottom of the pump there is a threaded hole. I think its 1/4". screw a bolt in that hole. find a piece of thin wood (preferably hard wood), and lay it on the edge of the hole. And then use your pliers to pry up on that bolt.
Once seal is popped loose, remove wood and pliers.... should be able to pull out by hand.
I'm hoping your diagnosis is correct!!

In the years since I did my first one, I've inherited from somewhere a very simple DIY tool that works really well, if anyone is interested.

If the pump isn't covered in rust, you can often free them up with some carb cleaner into the inlet end of the pump. Take a small screwdriver and pick at the pump impeller and get it rotating again. Carb cleaner and WD40 and then some 12V to the terminals and they fire up again. That is unless you burned it up, leaving it turned on too long while jammed.
