Should the vin# correspond with the key tag number? Mine does not.
Have had the bike for about a month and have not been able to lock fork.
I have lubed the lock and key is still meeting resistance when inserted and will not turn.
Can the tumblers be adjusted?
Thanks

Well believe it or not.... you lose that tag.... you won't be able to get new keys. WITH that key tag.... its gonna cost you around 60-70 bux. First step..... put that key tab in a safe place... You willl not be able to find a local lock smith you may have, make you that key either....
you are correct.... that tag has nothing to do with your VIN.... it only has to do with the manufacture of the keys....
As for tumblers in that fork lock...... I"m guessing since the keys are very special ... those tumblers would also be....
DO NOT use that fork lock.... even if you get it loosened up. By design, its a bit weak. Many owners found the hard way, by locking it, forgetting it was locked when they came back to their bike, grabbing the bars... and breaking off the pin....
if you are worried about security.... always lock the ignition... if that isn't enough.. there are those new hi dollar gizzies, where you just have to have the "fob" in your pocket, for your X to start. Actually not all that pricey.... and its a make sense security system...
Ger you new purchase on the registry's.... one on this site.
all of your updates done?

Thanks for the info wytfut.
Security is not a great concern, I guess that I was wanting everything to function as it should.
The only update lacking is on the ECU. I'm waiting for someone to tell me exactly what the tuner update will do for this machine......

In my opinion.... our X's are a prototype of sorts.... due to the small number built. Because of that, there are issues.... but all fixable, due to our tremendous community of owners. No one at this time has tackled the fork lock at this point, but I'd suspect someone will down the road.
As for Tunes.....:
it will throw my fuel to the engine... thus help on keeping them cooler. Still need a fan assist oil cooler, to really make the difference.
More power
smoother operating
OEM tune on some X's has created stalling when pulling up for a stop.... superXtune will knock that out plus the backfiring....
The superxtune if you buy it and learn how to run the program will let you see live time moniter, to see what is actually going on..... plus it will read all codes/faults...
I'm still learning the superxtune program, but what I've learned.... I really like it.

The tune that Atlantic SuperX Parts has is fantastic. Huge change in power, slight decrease in mpg (obviously).

Just a couple of thoughts about the steering lock... I have never seen one break as described. That's not to say that it couldn't or hasn't happened, but it is as well made as that found on any other American cruiser.
Possibly, the ignition switch tumbler has been replaced by a previous owner. Early in the life of these bikes, before we understood how to improve their reliability, many bikes suffered broken ignition switch brackets that led to the destruction of the butterfly part of the switch and subsequent loss of the tumbler. The fix was to replace the tumbler (with new keys of course) and install a beefier butterfly, and bracket.
The steering head lock is more difficult to change and so many owners just lived with two different keys in their pockets, the new one for the switch and the original key for the steering lock.
We've sold and repaired many of these switches over the years and may even have worked on your new Excelsior Henderson. If you are curious, give us a call or send an email with your serial number and we'll check our files.
