The clearcoat on the riveted medallion on one of my bikes has peeled off, exposing the metal which has badly darkened. I see multiple textures and finishes on there.
Can anybody confirm if that is just a solid brass plate that was coined or are there multiple layers or materials?
My thought was to carefully apply paint stripper or carb cleaner with a q-tip, remove the rest of the clearcoat, then polish it with metal polish and reclear. Anybody done this?

Have not heard of anyone doing this.. Go for it and report your findings!

I'll live with it if metal polish is going to do more harm than good.

Yeah, I got to picking at the emblem today. The black areas were the remaining clear coat that had corroded underneath. Carb cleaner and a wooden toothpick removed the last of the clear and Mothers Billet polish took care of polishing it out.
The polish actually over-shined some of the textured areas. It's a little TOO shiny compared to the stock finish on 1525 but, it looks better than it did. The general public won't know the difference.

You are correct that removing the coating and polishing it up makes it more attractive--but there is upkeep involved.
We actually have a supply of new Hanlon Quality tags if anyone wants one, but be warned that removing the original is very difficult.
