I don't have my X yet, but am already looking at doing either 10 or 12 inch apes. Any suggestions on fitment or if I need to replace the cables at all? I am not sure what size handlebars to use (I assume the same size as most Harley bars), so any information would be great. Also, if anybody has any pictures of their X with some apes, I'd love to see. Not many photos of these bikes out there, especially modified
Thanks!

Hi Animal,
When I purchased 741, the previous owner had installed bars similar to what you have described. At first, I wasn't sure if I'd like them because my hands tend to go numb, especially if elevated. After riding for a couple of years, I've grown accustomed to them with no problems. The bars look good and are at a comfortable height for me.
The previous owner also installed aftermarket Joker Machine master cylinders and turn switches, as well as braided steel hoses and cables. I doubt if the stock lines would reach.
After purchasing 901 which is basically stock, I realized that the downturn on the "apes" brings my hand position only a couple of inches above the stock height.
Have a look at the attached pictures and see what you think.

Thanks for the info! The bars on that bike look great, really a similar setup to what I am looking for. Do you have the previous owners contact info? I would love to find out how he made that setup happen

Sorry, I no longer have contact information for him. The hand controls are standard HD 9/16" master cylinders. I've used regular HD kits to rebuild them when necessary. I'm sure the brake and clutch lines are standardized as well. I really couldn't vouch for the throttle cables, though. I would assume they are also from a HD application as well.

I have 12" mini apes on S/N 827.... I think I went with stock wires, and 2-4" more on the clutch and front brake hoses, steel braided...

1229 has got a set of 3" dogbones and some Biltwell four aces bars - I switched out the switch housing, machined starter and horn into the brake and clutch perch and used the dogbone bar to mount mirrors (the mirror perches now hold cameras/easypass/etc) - go an extra 2" in your cables (though stock lengths would have worked with mine...aftermarket throttles are a bit trickier but if you go that route, touch base with me...I made the biltwell throttle work by machining out the included ferrules...
