Picked up this X about a year and a half ago and put a new battery in it. Today she let me down. Stone cold dead. Tried to jump it and she fired right up. Took the jumpers off and she died. Checked for loose connections at the battery and it was fine. Seems to me I had my other X for a few years with no battery troubles at all.
What kind of life are you guys seeing out of batteries?

Time to test your stator and volt regulator.....
If it started on a jump.... it should have stayed running...

Stator test...
Find the 3 prong plug off the stator (usually around the volt rev. Area).
Unplug.
get your volt meter out and set it on VAC settings..... plug into any 2 of the 3 wires. Should read 60 volts A.C. running at revs. Make sure to test all 3 wires.
Regulator test..
set volt meter at DC volts.....
put your leads on the battery.... running at speed should be showing around 13 volts..

Its really not that tough..
ive done several now. Many different X's.
Did it at Sturgis one year without hardly any tools. That was fun...yeeps

Look for a broken lug on the battery cables. It could be broken under the insulation where you can't see it... Making erratic contact ..

Quick follow up, got the battery on a charger and it wasn't that low, so figured it wasn't a charging issue.
Battery cables and grounds were good.
Two connectors under the seat had gotten wet a couple times and had some corrosion. Cleaned them up, put on a light coating of dielectric grease. While I was in there checked resistance to the starter button and it was way high. Cleaned it up with a points file (remember those?) and now .. not only does she start, but does soon the first push with no delay.

Nice!

after I went through all the connections and grounds described above when started an ran great. Saturday evening tried to fire he up for a ride and she went dead again. Dash lights went out and the only thing I got was a buzzing out of the bottom relay.
Pulled the tank looking for chaffed wires, and checked voltage at the starter relay and that's as far as I got.
-
So when this happened... was the battery dead?... or was it fine, and something else just pulled the volts hard?
-
Battery was fine. Gotta be a bad connection or a dead short somewhere. I'll try to get in the garage over the weekend and sort this out cause I want my next post here to be a positive one. :-)

That'd be my guess... just start looking... pulling those kind of amps you'd think it would really show
-
Hmmm... Check the battery again and make sure it didn't lose a cell... :P
Or.... Check the 50 amp relay while your checking things...
All else fails, Buy an AMERICAN MADE Yuasa, not a Chinese Knock off

Got a Diehard which I think is still made by Johnson Controls in their Holland plant, but hey, those kids with wooden shoes gotta eat too.
