Now...
I've only ever cranked em to 20lbs...
But I wasn't responsible for the first 10k on #1229 (nor the dumpings she endured)
So last fall, I'm making an oilchange before a run...
threads came out with the rear plug
Used one of these : Oil Drain Plug (http://www.autozone.com/parts/external-engine/engine-oil-drain-plug/dorman-engine-oil-drain-plug/232416_0_0/)
I just don't like relying on a wingnut with a tab hanging off the case...
Yeah, it worked for 1,500 miles in 4 days...
But 1/3rd of my roads are dirt...
So...
To Tap?
Anyone got a step by step how-to on this?
Is it the Pioneer Chapter only with the timesert taps to lend?
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Matt,
Pretty simple job.... Just scary to do...
Marty/jamie im sure have the tap kits to borrow and quite possibly the inserts also (tyme serts?).
Tell her what you got.... And proceed thusly....
Get every blanket and sleeping bag you own and some help to lay her down on her side. We dont want to disturb the patina.
Pull that bad plug out.....
Stuff that hole with a rag, into the case. Wanna catch any all filings that happen. And begin the process of tapping.
Marty/jamie dont have that tap.... Contact me... Got a buddy with one... Cant remember if front or rear.
Laying down on its side is just about the only way to keep it straight.
Good luck with it all... I know you are a brave soul... But be afraid to ask questions

Had the same issue with 343 a couple of years back, not wanting to split cases and all, raised front end with ATV jack, removed rear plug, used a 7/8-16 tap set with generous amount of bearing grease in the flutes and sloooowly started enlarging the hole, very frequent tap removal/clean off grease and replace grease, didn't want ANY chips loose inside the cases, and after final cleaning installed new drain plug (NAPA part), so far so good, many thousands of miles and oil changes later....still running great!

You guys are the best...
I'll call Marty tomorrow...
I was wondering about enlarging the whole and going with a bigger plug but I'm still threading in and out of sandcast aluminum...
I was gonna jack it from the rafters of the shop...
But laying it down could work...

Ya know.. I did the tap route and the only issue I noticed was I need to Camfer the newly tapped hole to let the plug set in the recess and seal the washer better. I went from the smaller stripped out threads to the same size as the bigger threads, using a stock plug and a new washer.

Mine were pretty bad so I made a reducer out of hex stock. Tapped it 1" and and had the stock size thread size tapped into the center. I then used loctite on the male threads. So my drain plug thread in and out of steel. Hopefully I will never have to deal with bad threads again.

What are the copper washers for the front plug?
I know they are 5/8"s
Got my 3/4...
But my guy gave me a litany of specs on possible fronts...
And I laughed and said I needed to consult the Internet before I bought...
So what size 5/8"?
