Hi,
just thought I would post quickly to introduce myself to the forum members as a new Super X owner.
I have thought about buying one for quite a while to sit alongside my Harley and Indians....
finally after a few glasses of wine and the usual late night internet search I (foolishly??) ended up buying 2 virtually idenetical '99 Super Xs from different sellers which are actually only 2 frame numbers apart!
I think its my mild form of OCD that leads me to get carried away, but payments were made and transporters booked.....
Both bikes should arrive here within the next 3 weeks!
I am sure I will have some questions as one of the bike hasnt run for quite some time and the previous owner has informed me that it had a stalling problem once warmed up and wouldnt start again until it cooled down....
He seems like a great guy and really did help me out big time and put my mind to rest that the rest of the bike is great with all the usual upgrades and the motor and gearbox have no other issues!
The previous owner did say that the cutting out once warmed up issue had been diagnosed as a faulty oil sensor or switch as far as he could rememeber - which doesnt seem quite right but if it is correct all I can think is that it may be giving a false low or high oil pressure reading causing the ECU to cut the ignition?
I considered crank sensor, but he says it definately wasnt the crank sensor needing replacement...
But without the bike here or knowing how its wired its all blind luck at the moment..
After much emailing and searching the previous owner believe that the fault was diagnosed by someone at superXparts.com , so I have fired an email off to them to see if they can remember it as it was a while ago from what I can make out as the bike has been standing for a long while since. Would be nice to have the parts sitting here ready to fit to get the bike up and running staight away though, I suppose I can but dream!

sorry to hear one of your purchases will be on the gloomy side... but I'm sure we can help you get it up and running...
So what part of the world are you reporting from?
I'm picking up that you are a true motorcycle enthusiast..... I hope you enjoy our community, and get an opportunity to meet up with us sometime....
At this point my opinion on the X that will not stay running after warming up..... I'm tending to think its probably a fuel issue (old grungy fuel).... as you stated that its been sitting around for a while.... Until you get it in your hands that's where Id start.
I have no knowledge of a low pressure or hi pressure oil sensor, that will shut down the engine. There is an oil lite sensor that will kick on if its too low, on the dash.

but just to clarify...
The bike has been sitting SINCE this issue occurred, so I dont think it was a fuel issue at the time, but I cant say anything for sure. I am just going from what the previous owner said he was told by an EH specialist - although its from memory and people do sometimes mix things up after a while.
I even asked him again if he was sure it wasnt a temperature or crank sensor and he said it was definately diagnosed as an oil sensor issue....
He said that the bike started right up and ran sweetly until it was warm, then would shut off, and wouldnt restart until cooled down...... thats when he laid it up in his garage until earlier this year.
I am over in the UK by the way!

well, after speaking a little further with the previous owner it turns out the exact symptoms of the problem are actually a little different to what was first said -
The bike would start and run great with plenty of power until it warmed up after several miles then it would stall, but would restart, then stall again on and on then eventually after a number of restarts it would fail to start altogether.
So sounds like it may well be a fuelling issue to me...but guess I am going to have to be patient and wait until it arrives this side before I can be sure!
glad I bought another one now - at least I have a running bike I can swap parts from as trial and error to determine the fault if needed!

Damn, I was thinking you could have had them sent to Marty and Jaime first so everything would be turn key clockwork, but knowing you Brits, I'm guessing you thrive on technical challenge!

as long as I have something else to go out and play on I dont mind having something stuck on the lift to play with. Its great when you get something running thats arrived/ was bought as a non runner too....................that is unless it gets expensive! - that just takes ALL the fun out of it ;)

Hmm... Sounds like you may need an updated tune to cure the stalling... Also check the rubber cap on the Throttle Body... They rot after a couple of seasons from age and heat.. There are a lot of important updates that need to be done to make the X a reliable ride. Read up on the Yahoo boards, this website, also check out www.superxparts.com There is a wealth of info out here..

Hi,
well, the bike has had a lot of the updates already done - it did have some listed on the register profile with the 2nd from last previous owners details, but that has since disappeared after I updated the register to change the owners details to myself. Cant remember all the updates it has had done, but will be coming with a list and history from the previous owner who has very kindly offered to send me over a box of spares and all the history he has for the bike which would have been lost if I hadnt managed to trace him.

I am sort of assuming some kind of initial production run bike?

Jennie is the nickname assigned to the touring model of super X. Look around on this site.... or other various sites.
It'll be all oyster (a shade of silver), fat white walls, and most of the time loaded with all of the factory options.
In fact you may just seen r66johns posted just last week on here....
Pretty special model, released later in the final production year.

The bikes both cleared customs on Wednesday afternoon and I collected them both on Thursday morning 1st thing.
Both look ok, although I always allow for some slight economy with sellers descriptions of actual condition.
One bike was described as having "no corrosion" on any of the chrome parts and guess what it has corrosion on some of the chrome parts.
The other bike was described as having a small scratch and crack in the paint on one side of the rear fender - in reality is has a 3 inch crack through the fender up one side several deep scratches and is bent/kinked on both sides as if it has had a rather hard on the fender from the rear......... no evidence that it happened during shipping so I am pretty sure it was like that when collected and the pictures I was sent just happen to be taken at a very convenient angle..
oh the joys of importing unseen lol.....
Overall I am happy with my purchases as they werent bought to sell on and the problems can be rectified as and when I get time.
I am hoping to have one bike up and running and registered next week - maybe a little optomistic...

checked all the old oil was out of the motor and the cooler then -
new battery, fresh oil....... spin over to get the oil circulating and pressure up..... fill tank with fresh fuel......... ignition on and spin her over....nothing :( ohh the disappointment.
Checked the plugs and doesnt seem to be any spark...so the tank is coming off tomorrow to have a better look - if its not raining as it is now!
Bearing in mind this bike has been standing unused for a couple of years as a display piece drained of oil and fuel - so a few teething troubles may be expected to coax her into life again I suppose..

2 things you should hear once u turn the switch on... to help with elimination ...
The fuel pump spin up pressure.... doesn't take 3 seconds. Should sound smooth and even. Nothing irregular or grinding. Easily can be heard .
Second, get your head down by the air breather. This is going to be more faint. You should hear a soft mechanical whirring and some clicks when you turn on the switch. This will be the AIC cycling. This also will be very quick and should sound smooth

pretty sure they are both working ok..
more of a clicking when turning the ignition off from down near the airbox - which is the same as my other bike. I need to get the tank off and have a look just incase who ever drained all the fluids before it was laid up didnt connect something back up. After that its plugs out and check for proper spark.
(The other bike I brought in is now up and running by the way ..as of this morning!)

just to update this thread -
Both bikes now up and running, both now passed U.K. mot and should be registered in the following few weeks - hopefully filling in the paperwork tomorrow if I get time.
really odd that the supposedly faulty crank sensor is now working absolutely fine in the other bike - was out on it for a few hours the other day and it performed perfectly... go figure..
the non engaging starter problem on 1304 has also disappeared since the bike was taken out for a long run.... all really weird stuff!!
