Just acquired sat for 10 years
« on: December 19, 2011, 11:38:03 AM »
Just dragged home a 2009 X that has been sitting for 10 years, the last one was out side.
7400 miles on ODO.
Chrome is ruined.
Turns over and has spark.
Fuel pump is dead.
Clutch master and slave are dead.
Tranny goes into all gears.
Pulled tank and am replacing fuel pump, and cleaning injectors.
Will try to start, before going any further, and looking for or doing upgrades.

My wife and I love the styling, and would like to use the rolling frame to start a build if this motor is beyond help.

Has anyone done and engine swap, I am thinking a Baker RH drive transmission, and a late model HD V Twin.

The other thought is a XL 1200 Sporster motor, which is already a RH drive.

Any one else done an engine swap.

Thanks for any input.

That's really a sad sad story..... but I'm sure its not going to be the first time or the last.

I know that John Jones put a S&S in one.... and I'd guess he hasn't been the only one to do this.... may want to give him a call...

There are alot of Resources for the upkeep and reliability of the Super X. Check out the Yahoo resource Board as well as this website. In the X Family, there is no stupid question. Most of us have been in the saddle and had problems. Your fellow Xer's will gladly help you along with advice, comments and an occasional smart ass remark!
Welcome to the Family!! (You haave to buy the BBEEEERRR!!)

Thanks for the support guys, I got the fuel pump to work yesterday, and things look brighter for the old girl every time I turn wrenches on it.

Next I will pull the injectors and give them a cleaning.

While you got that tank off.... you may want to run some steel washers around inside.... just to make sure anything loose isn't going to go thru that pump again, and the injectors....

The beast runs.  Had time Christmas Morning, and the wife and I got the beast started. Started on the first try. Good thing my wife likes our bikes.

Only ran for a minute and it starts every time.

How nosy is the top end on your X mine seems about like a Harley, almost as nosy as a Sporster but not quite.  Hope oil flow is not an issue.

Now to pull the primary cover and find the problem with the clutch slave and master, and see what updates have been done.

Thanks for all the support.

Flushed the clutch master and slave. Bled it well and clutch works, fired it up and took a short spin, up to operating temp.

Rocker boxes leaked and seem to have stopped, will do new gaskets.

Small electrical bug to track down, short in lights someplace.

Will change oil run again, and start tear down for restoration.

The noisy vale train is normal. There were some cams made that had different profile.. More power, less valve noise..
