Backfiring Problem
« on: April 23, 2012, 04:46:48 PM »
I recently purchased my 1st super x #682.  Bike is great but backfires when I get on the throttle and the engine shuts off.  It used to only backfire when cold & in mid range rpms in every gear but now backfires whenever I get on the throttle.  Please help! Thanks!!

Rick,
You are witnessing X battery syndrome. At least that is what you are describing.
The frequency of vibrations our X's produce, make the battery connections come loose.  All 3 of our have done it one time or another.

Not so long ago, I got where I was actually soldering the cables at the bolt to the posts. It worked pretty good.

Jamie/Marty sell a "no memory" battery cable, that is a bit pricey, but the problem goes away.

For now..... pull your battery cover, and tighten those bolts back down good and tight. Don't use lock tite, as it won't conduct current.

If this isn't the problem.... please come back we'll help!!

I'd need to also state  that John Jones would probably have some sort of cable that would also take care of the problem.....

Hey Bruce and All... Sometimes you'll find the cables tight but the "Lug" has broken up under the shrink wrap... Just an extra check while you have the Battery cover off! Also an easy fix..
There is an easy battery box mod out here to take some of the tension off of the cable too..

thanx Jumper.....
might as well, u r already there....

and appreciate the reminder on that long ago modification. Hard to remember what X owners know and don't know....

Rrck,
The modification that Jumper is relating to.... is to cut the back of the battery box, cables enter the box. I myself just cut the box for the positive cable to get more length when working in the vicinity. But cutting will help hold the cables with slack to the battery better. As stated in the earlier message though, those hi dollar battery cables seem to work the best at this point of the game....

Thank you for all the help!  When I took the + cable off it pretty much fell apart, so I threw a new end on there & it solved my backfiring problem! If you guys are ever in Buffalo, I will buy you a beer! Thanks again!

I have super x 976, lately my battery light flickers off of idle.
I volt checked  the battery while it was running, and it doesn't seem to be charging unless the engine is idling. Has anyone seen this or know whats wrong?

Most probably your Stator is going, or very close....
second could be the regulator....

do you have a fan assisted oil cooler on this X? .... reason I'm asking is these bikes run pretty hot, and because the stator is bathed in oil all the time.... the stator life without the fan assisted oil cooler..... will bake.

are you mechanically skilled?.... if so, I can give you a couple of tests to narrow it down.
Bruce
If you reply after tuesday... my reply will be quite a long period of time, as I'm heading to the annual X rally on Wednesday....
