Swapping drivetrains #307
« on: July 03, 2018, 09:04:12 PM »
So I think I might have enough time to pull the engine on 307 and  swap in the "27 mile" #2xx in its place.

Besides marking all wiring connectors (I seem to remember hearing many are the same style so it's easy to mix up)

Are there other major pointers?

I have never been in the fuel tank,  can't remember but does someone know the auto p/n for a new sock?

I'll report what I find shelled out in #307, its bound to have major problems since I've found so much metal in the filter and oil

Tips? I outlined and photographed what needs to be done to get the engine in and out of the frame.

  • Get hold of a cherry picker and pick up the engine from the inlet manifold bolts in the heads. That's just about the perfect balance point. The engine is too heavy and awkward to try to just muscle it into place without causing damage to parts.
  • Spend a few bucks at Home Depot and buy some black pipe insulation and zip ties. cover all your frame rails and brackets with the foam and zip tie it into place. It just makes the whole job SOOOO much easier when you aren't worried about scratching and gouging things. Trust me. This is key.
  • The starter motor is the keystone to making it fit. You MUST remove it to get the engine into the frame. Once that's off, it comes in and out with no drama.

Thank you,  I'll take note of your tips. I sure wish this thing hadn't of caused trouble but it started life out on a tough note as it was on the demo fleet.
