New owner from California
« on: November 28, 2010, 09:59:58 AM »
Hello everyone.

I just purchased a 99' super X from local fella that bought it from a local dealership.  Pretty cool!  The other owners I know bought them from out of the area.

I was shoppping for a new bike an stumbbled on a local listing for the Super X.  A trip down to his house with a friend that owns 2 of them and a deal was struck.

Road it for 300 miles and fell in love.  Before I put anymore miles on it, I thought I should replace the worn from brakes (9,800 miles when I got it) before I eat the rotor up.  That lead to investigating the oil leak, which led to worn rear hub, loose drive pulley, loose front rotor support rod, electrical aftermath from previous owner, and cracked support brackets.

I just got done with 3 days of work on it.  I "nut and bolted" the whole bike.  Installed some updates, like an oil cooler, ignition switch bracket and air cleaner update.

I need to replace the intake manifold gaskets along with the rear throttle body gasket because I think I have an intake leak.  It seems to run too lean, but I'm waiting for the other ECU to come back with the Super X tune.  I think I'll replace the gaskets to make sure because the factory support bracket was found broken.

This bike is lucky I found it.  I don't think the previous owner would have ever checked it out and it would have never made it.

Update:

Replaced the intake manifold gaskets and installed the SuperX tune and it runs perfect now!

Thanks, it is fun.

I know the transmissions are clunky and have issues with finding N when running and sometimes kicking it into N when down shifting, but that isn't a safety issue.  The only issue I've heard of is the transmission lock up.  From my research it appears that it is related to lack of lubrication due to improper maintainance.  If I am uninformed, please point me to some tech I can read up on.

Depending on who you ask... I'm no authority on the lubrication issues of the tranny... you are correct ... partially.
If you get your tranny updated, the missed neturals won't be such a problem, especially if you "opt" for the shift kit at the same time.
I've got Bobby Baldwins shift kit in my tranny, which is good... but looking at Jamies (I've removed 5 tranny's).... I like it better. I'm very sure John Jones also has something also.... very good.
The Lube issue doesn't have anything to do with the safety/lock up issue. The lock up issue delves from quality control when our tranny's were built. There is a little bit too much slop in the bushings, and not the right kind of clips holding the gears on the rails.
You lose a clip, because your gears are slopping around a bit, the clip drops into the rest of the gears and locks it up.
A few years back... someone in our community did a survey to find out how many failures there were. If I remember right it came out to around 1%. If this were a problem with any of the big operating companies now.... Kawasaki, HD, Honda, etc. .... it would have been a huge recall.
I don't know how else to tell you.... get it done, as pulling in the clutch when it happens will not save your life. That back tire, will be locked tight, at what ever speed you're going. Plus what ever else that gets damaged mechanically and estetically to your bike when it happens.

Here's a link for the removal instructions. .....   http://www.excelsiorhenderson.com/pages/tech/pdf/EH_Transmission_Removal_Guide_X.pdf

below I've listed links for the shops that I know of that will help you out, plus Russ, who is by email

Point taken.

Good tech info as well.

Think I'll have Jamie do his thing once I remove the cassette.  I just recently purchased a transmission gear and shaft lot from Callahan (spelling?) for a really good price.  I should talk to him about rebushing that lot and building it myself.

Thanks for the info.

Aaron.

I'm tickled you took note.... your welcome.... its hard to convince new owners (myself very included) that the tranny issue is a real safety issue....
