new owner of #1756

I'm the new current owner of #1756.  I bought it from Greg who I think bought it new in a crate in 2006.  I'm not sure what mods he had done, other than line the tank, put in a new fuel pump with sock and rerouted the crankcase breather line to the swing arm.
When I purchased it it didn't run but on one cylinder, which I quickly determined (partially thanks to this forum) was a stopped injector which I sent to John in MN and purchased a couple of new ones.  Then it ran awesome but after my first run of about 30 minutes, it had oil all over the floor.  Thanks to you all I drained about 1 quart of oil out of the crankcase because of the original owner had overfilled it.  No more leaks!  It has 800 miles.
My question is, the check engine light is on.  I'm guessing it's from having injector problems.  I understand that the light may go out if I restart the bike about 40 times?  Is there anyway I can determine what is causing the light to be on without an examinator?  Am I likely to do any damage if I keep riding it?
Finally, I'm really excited to "meet" a lot of you with similar interests!

I'm hoping you know the EH process to check the oil on the dip stick.... If not let me know. You want that stick to at least show on the bottom 2 hash marks, but you have to check it the proper way...

As for the lite.... Its probably the injector throwing the code, but since you really have a new X, that has sat around for quite a while, I'd read it just to make sure. You can use an OBD I code reader if so desired, but i'd suggest the suprXtune.... It'll be handy later on. It'll read all the codes... You are correct on clearing the lite on switching it on and off. I've heard all sorts of numbers..... Give that a try, or clear it immediately with the tune program.

Sorry about treating you as a newbie, but not enough information in your post.

Curious as to what you used for a liner... If you didn't use the red liner that Jamie applies... There will be some issues if you use ethanol...

Do you have a fan assisted oil cooler.. Sorry, but this and the tune are crtical for the long life of your X.

Thanks for the reply!  It does have a tune code of I think, 3083?  Label under the seat.
I now know the correct procedure for checking the oil.  I think the previous owner didn't and that is why I got such a good deal on it, as it was puking.  That has been stopped!
It has an oil cooler but it is mounted to the down tube on the left side...aftermarket?  Wondering if I had better get a fan assisted cooler?  I'm in Utah with a lot of heat, but I really don't ride many miles a year (1000 or so).
A couple of times I have heard a sort of rubbing noise coming from the right rear as I'm riding.  Think I better check that back bearing.
Where do I get a superxtune tool?

That oil cooler sounds like OEM or Bobby Baldwins..... Its not enough. Its better than nothing, but its still running too hot.... Really doesn't matter on how many miles, if its running hot when you ride, not good

As the clearance on our back tires to the belt drive is really close take a look there.... May be as simple as just aligning the rear axle

Hey David,

I just had a strange noise from the back of my bike, turned out to be the belt as Bruce says, but mine was just tight not rubbing. As I understand, you want the belt loose enough to twist it 90 degrees with your fingers.
