I'm getting restless to ride.... usually by this time every year we've had one day that was warm enough to ride..... didn't really get that this year...
Plus this very site is a bit slow lately.... so I'm gonna try and busy it up a little bit here....
So 525 is on the rack.
Gonna reclear the front fender (gotta chip in it a couple of years ago). Got the front tire bought and mounted. Reclear the tank (my chubby lil thighs have rubbed thru). change the oil and filter. And just sort of go thru a few irratables on the old girl....
By now most of us I'm sure have come to realize that each of our bikes have their own quirks.... that may or may not be fairly common with other X's.
Dennis Bennet was down this weekend (love ya brother!).... and we were talking. He's had approx. 10 oil pressure units on his DWS. He also just replaced the battery for the first time in 14 years this past summer.... .PLUS on our jaunt to Junction City, we replaced his stator for the FIRST TIME in 30K+ miles. All this with no fan oil cooler. He's got the oil cooler, just no fan. I find all three of those kind of historical..... well maybe Tim Breidenbach can compete with the oil pressure sending units.
Roger Hodge, has been doing major research on our TPS's (throttle Position Sensor). His is failing, and the TPS population for super X's is REALLY lean. I read everything he sends me..... And it comes down this way.... Apparently there are as many TPS's as there are different vehicles with fuel injection. I said vehicles..... NOT breeds, yeah lots bigger number. It sounds like a majority of these different vehicles use identical TPS housing as our Super X's. But not one has been discovered yet that matches our voltage/amps. Roger has one hell of a counter guy that has tried to help..... plus from what I understand, a couple of manufacturer engineers too. He found one close.... but there is a range of rpm,s that his X doesn't like on that TPS...... Anyone have ANY THOUGHTS SUGGESTIONS on this subject.... please post here or let Roger know. Any help he can get will help US ALL.
Roger has also had a couple of electrical ghosts thru the years....
Jeff Browns Tribute X did very well last weekend at the abate show. But he has been having problems with the starter cranking..... even with the ignition switch off. So he's got the battery pulled currently. Replaced the selinoid twice, once with Jamie/Marty's, and then he found a cross over here locally (almost identical). Thought it was fixed, washed it.... started doing it again. We're gonna start looking at that starter button lead.... gotta be 12 volt short ....
525 EATS rear tail lites bulbs. I got an LED replacement down in Junction City this fall, we'll just see how long it lasts. I'm lucky if I get a full year.
One of my irratants on 525 is the rear brake lite switch. Almost irratates me as bad as trying to put the rear wheel back on.
The rear brake lite switch is in a very hard place to get. The rubber cap has too much memory, so it loves to pop up and exposed the wire leads. In the early days we were supposed to keep an eye on that switch.... but in reality it turned out we should actually keep an eye on the wire leads and grunging up with gunk.
So today I pulled the rear wheel off (remember above, I don't like putting it back on) so I could gain access to the pulling the ECU cover off, and see if there is any way of getting any slack in those silly wires to the brake lite switch. Really was assuming the wires were not helping that rubber cap, and that the wires were a bit too tight....
I'm not really sure why I'm chasing this issue down.... hell the rear brake lite switch/wire leads haven't worked in over 5 years.... as I just got exasperated with that itty bitty place to work.
Got the cover pulled off..... and actually there is a little bit of slack in those wire leads. Enough that nothing is pulling tight. Took another look at the switch with the leads, and there is actually slack there... not much but there is...
So I tywrapped the rubber cap down. I hate how it looks..... looks like a bailing wire trick. But I do not know what else to do. And at this point (the battery isn't in it) I don't even know if the brake lite will come on.... even though I tested the switch and the leads (all good after a good cleaning)
Any one else made their head hurt on this issue? If so let me know here.....
Got any of your own quirky things on your X..... bring them to the table here.... its fun to see the differences...... they are in a sense each a prototype.....
