Pulling the Primary Cover
« on: May 01, 2015, 09:42:52 PM »
I've got a couple of tips that may help others when removing and replacing the primary cover. Some of you probably already do this stuff, so don't laugh! I'm just looking out for the newbies.  ::)

When removing the Primary, overcoming the powerful magnets in the alternator rotor can be a challenge, not to mention that if your fingers get in the way, they may be pinched. What I've done to help get a hold of the primary is to tap one of the mounting holes at the front with a 3/8' tap. (Be sure to clean any metal shavings out of the hole before reinstalling the cover). Now a 3/8" bolt can be installed to make a handle at the front of the primary. A 1/4" bolt can be placed into one of the banjo cover holes towards the rear to make another handle. You now have to places to grab the primary safely and solidly. This will also help when reinstalling, minimizing the gasket slipping out of place as the rotor magnets yank the cover onto the engine case.

Another thing I do that helps during re-installation of the primary is to place one or two guide pins in the case mounting holes. I've simply taken a couple of 1/4" X 3" bolts and ground the heads of so that the end is slightly tapered. These help guide the cover and help keep the gasket in place while working against the magnets during re-installation.
