Cylinder/Injector ID
« on: March 20, 2017, 03:13:43 PM »

While the engine descriptions I've read refer to the cylinders as "Front" and "Rear" the wiring diagram for the injectors identifies them as "Fuel injector 1" and "Fuel injector 2"

My take would be that the front cylinder would be #1 and the rear #2. But that's a guess.   Anybody know for sure?

Fuel injector #1 has a yellow/blue lead while #2 has a red/gray lead in the wiring diagram.  Both have orange/white leads.

If the injector wiring feeds are reversed would one injector feed fuel while the coil on the other cylinder fires.

Or does it matter which injector on which cylinder?

For practical purposes just looking at the injectors and seeing if the yellow wire feeds the front or rear injector would probably help.

Thanks;  Craig

number 1 is the front
and number 2 is the rear...

I'm not real sure where you are going with this Craig?

as for injectors, they will work on either cylinder.... they are identical

not sure what yellow wire you are talking about....

Hi Bruce,

The wires I'm referring to are the injector power plugs: The wiring diagram shows the wire harness lead to the #1 injector uses a yellow/blue and an orange/white wire feed.  The wire harness feed to the #2 injector is red/grey and orange/white.

The issue, if I must clearly tattle on myself, is I had the injectors disconnected for about a month and I'm having a starting issue.  If I reversed the wire harness connectors would that stop the bike from starting?  It turns over fine, just no ignition.

So if you are certain the front cylinder is also the #1 cylinder that is probably good enough.  A visual confirmation that the yellow/blue wire feeds the injector to the front cylinder would be excellent.  I was a little hesitant to just switch the wire harness feeds.  Since I'm not getting any ignition I wonder if the ECM somehow recognizes the plugs are reversed and won't send any operating signals

I can hear the fuel pump run when first turning on the key, and winding down when I turn it off.

I also had the gas tank off for a month or two: any issues with air locks in the fuel line/fuel rail?

Thanks again;
Craig

I don't recall the ECU having those capabilities....   Switch them the way they are supposed to be and give it a try

Thank you for your responses.

I'm trying to be sure "the way they are supposed to be" by confirming which harness lead is on which injector on a working bike by just looking at the injectors, maybe pull the wire protector back a quarter inch if needed, to determine which injector uses the yellow/blue or red/grey leads.

I trust you are correct with the wiring diagrams injector number 1 corresponding to the front cylinder and wiring diagram injector #2 corresponding to the rear cylinder but I haven't been able to verify that.

I'm a bit hesitant to just switch the leads for worry of what it might damage if they are not correct.

In general Craig on the schematic....
Front of bike is left...   You can note where hand controls and head lites are..
If that helps..

Yeah, when I was reading the schematic earlier today I was looking for the subsystem component schematics but didn't find any.  Some scattered component terminal IDs.

Marty confirms that you are correct with fuel injector 1 corresponding to the front cylinder and fuel injector 2 to the rear.  She also says they are marked.  Maybe I'll have my glasses checked, or was it just the lighting?

Anyway, the bike is up and running now: turns out I plugged the fuel gauge into the fuel pump under the instrument pod.  She quoted the big three of Compression, Fuel, and Spark  (I hope I'm getting that correct) for starting.

So for these past subjects all I found wrong was the fouled coil to plug connection (bad coil boot) and the lack of an oil cooler. Idle speed is closer to 950 quickly and the engine is not heaving fore and aft. That is just idling for 2 minutes or less, 2-3 times.

as another post script, connecting the fuel pump to the fuel gauge didn't cause any damage but the bike did then illuminate the 'check engine' light.

My OBD scanner read the codes P-230 and P1231.  These are together in the manual as fuel pump relay issues.  The scanner erased the codes.
