What is is about an X?
« on: July 19, 2014, 08:31:42 PM »
Man I love this bike. I ride it an it just makes me smile. Sometimes I just sit and stare at it and grin. There is really nothing else like it. Thanks Dan.

So now I'm curious; what is it you guys like about your X? Why did you buy yours?

They are a site to behold..... but its also in the eyes of the beholder.
Certain things tend to turn folks off on our beautiful machines. ...
Eg. ... the front fender can turn folks off in a second. Or like me, you love it...

Over all:
There is nothing else like it.
And for what ever reason (its 15 years old now) they don't seem to age.... still very attractive.
My point of veiw on looks.......    it looks like it was retro pulled from the 40's (not the 20's where I believe was the intent). With modernized touchs of those looks.
The ride is very nice.... although my boney butt doesn't like the seat  (thus the corbin)....
Power is superb.
Handles very well for such a heavy thing.
And I can't hardly go anywheres without someone asking questions, or taking that second look.

When I was bike shopping back in 99...... I was looking at old Nortons and BMW's..... (I know, quite the separation).... but just kept coming back to the EH.... it just caught me. Finally purchased in 2001.

I agree with everything Bruce said.  I was looking for a bike in 2001 and I wanted something other than a Harley.  I had test ridden EH's in Sturgis in 99 & 2000.  Found a Deadwood on e-bay and got mine in 2002.  Still makes me smile when I ride it.  It is just cool to ride something very few people will ever ride lea alone own8)

I've only been an Xer for a few years now, but I am hooked! When I saw 741 on eBay, I just had to have it! I was considering another Harley, but after doing a bit of research, decided it had to be the X. Not only was the appearance appealing to me, but knowing the bike was built with the state-of-the-art technology of the time was also a great motive.
In addition, was the incredible story behind the making of the Excelsior Henderson motorcycles. A modern day "David and Goliath" type situation. Dan and his team succeeded where few in history have, they manufactured a proprietary machine of their own design against all odds. It's really unfortunate it ended like it did.
My X's can keep up with 100cu Harleys all day long, and out handle them. Xes have anti-dive, Harleys don't. Service on the X is easier than a Harley (oil changes, tune ups, etc). Ever try to change a drive belt on a Harley? Everything about the X is of a superior design to Harley in my opinion. What's not to love?

Right out of high school, and before I went to college I worked at a motorcycle dealership, and classic / retro bikes were a lustful infatuation.  I was particularly interested with unique cruisers, and had grown a bit irritated with the Harley clique, and especially the cultish following by many riders who would spout off about "American legacy, or spirit". Or all sorts of other feel good patriotic dribble regarding a brand that quietly outsourced various parts to other countries for a lower cost while valiantly flying an overly large American flag.

It was a turn-off.  Harleys gave me the impression of having a lost sense of self while still being a very nice bike, the ego of the company and its riders had reached a very uncomfortable level.

Since our store had announced it would be a dealer for a new American cruiser promising to offer the highest quality of American parts, design, and craftsmanship, there was a lot of buzz about what these bikes were going to look like, sound like, and ride like.

When the first Super-X demo bike showed up at our Ramer Motors dealership, it was almost like being introduced to the most attractive woman you have ever seen in your life.

The design lines were beyond gorgeous, the chrome's luster was brighter than anything else in the showroom.  The forks were this monstrous mutant-like high quality complex masterpiece of function.

I crawled around the bike and gently checked the fitment of parts, looked at the welds on the frame (I am now a welding inspector and instructor) checked the quality around edges of the fenders, and the paint underneath.

Everything about the bike punched you in the face with attention to detail, and every piece, line and curve seemed to just be a symphony of collective perfection.  Comparing it to any of the other brand new bikes on the floor was ridiculous.

Before the E-H Super x, I really liked the Harley Springer models.  After the Super X I never looked at them the same again.

Everyone wanted to test ride this new bike with a 17,000 price tag.  I never dared ask, I was an 18 year old kid, but the owner insisted.

My first impression watching that bike rumble like an earthquake intimidated me.  As soon as I got to 2 mph the rumble turned to glass, and the balance was amazing.

In that first 10 feet my heart was beating like crazy, I was almost the most nervous I had ever been in my life, and I had the epiphany that this was the ultimate motorcycle on the face of the earth.  I only rode the bike around the block a few times, but came back shaking and breathless.  My dad had a Heritage Softtail with all the trimmings, and I never once got that sensation riding that.  I had also ridden a really nice Yamaha Royal Star that failed to deliver a euphoria like the EH.

The last ten years had been spent building my career, and thoughts of owning my very own were always on the back burner.  There are a few other bikes I might like to own, keep, and ride, but the Super X was always the Big Baddie.
