Fuel Filter possibility
« on: April 03, 2017, 03:42:22 PM »
Its my understanding the X must have some form of a suction screen but that is it.  There is no replacement fuel filter.

Since these bikes are fuel injected maintaining the required 55-62 psig at the injector is important,  thus any filter installed should be installed ahead of the fuel pressure regulator.

Anyone know of a way to do this?  I got to looking and the newer HD dressers have their filter and regulator as a separate unit in the tank. They use same pressure regulation range, 55-62 psig, so if all the parts were purchased and if one could machine a dummy regulator to fit in place of tge factory X regulator, so long as hose connection was possible this could be a technically feasible correct application of a fuel filter.

Or have i got it wrong?  If i did an external one it needs to be large enough to not present any pressure drop and it would need replaced often to maintain low pressure drop

Way back... John Simpson (Florida, and now not part of the community) rigged a quick connect to an aftermarket fuel filter. His concerns were, with fuel pressure, the rubber hose was a risk.

I believe it was Roger Hodge (broken bow, nebraxi) who went to great lengths of research and detail for an external fuel filter. He was posting his findings on the Yahoo site.

Rich I'm not sure where you are going with your post. The sock we use now, located before the fuel pump and regulator.

As for ahead or before.... That's what is being done. All of these examples are ahead/before pump.

Give me another shot there Rich..

Bruce, i was not aware there was a sock as ive never had my pump out.  The service handbook doesn't mention it either so i was concerned for the long term.

My main point was putting any filter downstream is not smart as regulated pressure will be off as it builds dP over life cycle.

Therefore the option i found which could potentially work was what i mentioned as the HD filter regulator is separate from the pump.

Now that i know there is a sock ill probably just replace it due to age & hope for the best.  Its not as fine of filtration but must be deemed ok.  The best socks are rated at 31 micron, the liwer class ones around 70 micron.  Id assume most final filters on a gas fuel injection system are around 10 micron.  The socks can only be so restrictive as they'd cause pump cavitation so theyll never be a fine particulate rating.

The 2nd gen victory bikes had two socks 1 x 8 inches so im assuming they are the 31 micron media.  This walbro element referenced is probably not the 31 micron media.

Ill keep what is stock as someone thought it would work who designed the fuel system
