starter motor
« on: June 25, 2025, 01:19:31 AM »
Hi community!
New issue for my Deadwood: after two warnings I stupidly ignored, during a ride the starter motor sounded as some kind of whistle for 2 - 3 seconds and then the engine fired off.
Once I opened the starter motor I realized there's nothing to keep there any more.
I'm trying to find a new motor but I wonder if some gear near the rotor can have gone bad, the shaft side of the starter motor seem to be ok, absoluteley no damage I can see.
Thanks you all for any opinion or advice!

Our starter motors... and I quote from years ago "are bullet proof". But who knew 26 years later we'd still be riding them.
As for the "whistling noise"... I can't answer that.
ehpart.net I'm sure has the replacement motor and the gear..
Just looked at the parts catalog on this web site, splines on tip of starter shaft, with big gear spinning crank. Its possible, any of that could have worn, including small needle bearing.  With the "sprag" clutch there, keep in mind the gear have a tendancy to spin when the engine is running.... last I knew.

Thank you Bruce, I'll keep you uppdate.
This issue gave me the chance to ride as passenger ... for 500 miles in two days!
I can check that experience as done.

Was the engine turning when you heard the noise? Or was it screeching but, no pumping of the cylinders? This sounds like the starter clutch, not the starter.
Who was it who had this problem in the past few years? I can't find it. Berlin Bob via text?

As Bruce mentioned, there's a one-way sprag clutch in the primary drive area of the engine. Page 70, item #10 in the parts catalog. When they slip, they make an awful screeching and crunching noise. I've never had one fail on a Super X but, had them go bad on numerous other bikes. If there's no obvious damage to the starter motor, that's probably the source.

The engine was running and then stopped.
The starter is definitively gone, no chance to rebuild. A new starter is coming in days, I try with that and start the engine, we'll see...
About 2000 miles ago I let change the gears, I don't know if something got assembled in a wrong way.
