Air filter assembly and throttle body bracket
« on: August 25, 2013, 08:02:28 AM »
A few of us local Illinois(Chicagoland area) guys got together yesterday for breakfast, there were 5 X's actually at Denny's in Willowbrook. We had a nice time meeting and talking about our bikes, some knowledgeable guys that's for sure.
Someone noticed my air cleaner assembly had some play in it and thought the throttle body bracket may have been broken. I checked it out and found out that 2 of the allen head screws were stripped on the air filter cover, but I managed to get them out. The throttle body bracket looked fine, maybe the grommets are worn a bit. I was concerned because they said it could create a lean condition and you could possibly burn your valves. It seems fine but any other thoughts on this? Maybe I'll change out the grommets if they're available.
Thanks,
Joe

Hook a rubber hose to a propane tank, turn it on, wave it around the grommets to see if your idle speed changes. it may get in through the air cleaner though.
Other thing you can do is shoot brake cleaner through the straw, at the intake assembly checking for leaks this way, looking for a change in idle.

Hi Kevin,
It was nice meeting you and your daughter. I said grommets but they're more like rubber bushings the are between the bracket and cylinder so those I think are just worn a little from heat and age. Thanks for the tips though I forgot about the brake cleaner trick. Maybe next time we can go for a ride!
Take Care,
Joe

someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think you can remove the air cleaner and see if the bracket is broken. I ~think~ the bracket bolts between the heads and goes behind the air cleaner backing plate. It would crack in the middle allowing the assembly to sag, causing an air leak at the manifold.

You might still have the old style paper air filter that you probably can no longer find so this is another good reason to start thin=king about an update.

BTW, let me know when you are ready to do the trans. Maybe I''ll have a bike lift by then, :-)

Hi Frank,
You are correct, you can remove the air cleaner and inspect the bracket which is what I did. My bracket looked fine, maybe the rubber bushings are a little worn causing a little movement in the air filter assembly. I think it's fine, I may replace the bushings if they're available. My filter did look to be original but it looked clean, maybe it was replaced. Thanks for the offer, I'll keep you in mind.

I got 2 electric handy lifts. I have no problem loaning one out(limited time) to help a fella out, long as I dont have a bad experience as I have in the past (loaning tools). You would have to provide a pickemup, as Ive turned yuppie driving a VW Jetta.

Thanks for the offer Kevin, I'll keep you in mind too. I don't like borrowing tools either and I probably won't be getting to it until maybe the fall.]
