muffler baffles
« on: August 28, 2013, 05:28:58 PM »
I'm getting 1756 sorted out and really love the smooth power and sound.  Speaking of which, I have the stock mufflers and don't really like all the loud H/Ds we seem to have around here.  I'm considering knocking out the "freeze plug" in each baffle but am worried it will make it too loud.  Will that really help to cool the engine and does anyone have a sound bite of before and after?
Thanks
David

Yep.... Knock 'em out! I learned this from Dan in 2000.... A bit of a "rap" when you hit it, yet not as bad as Slashcuts..Long Shots... etc...

Here's a clip from the bike I bought last April. It sounds nice to me but it is loud when you get on it. I like it but you may not, I think they're to quiet with the baffles in myself. If you like a quieter bike, this may be too loud for you.

Also for noise issues you take out just one baffle per muffler.... Not as loud as both, but more than OEM

Thanks for the sound clip!  Is there 2 baffles to knock out per muffler?  I wonder if the one in the clip has them both knocked out.  I think that the one in the clip may be a little loud but hard to tell.  One of my concerns is that the mufflers have some blueing which I suspect is from running a little hot.  That is really my purpose in removing the baffles.  Also this winter I'll send off the module to get a new tune.

2 baffles (look like freeze plugs) per muffler. Some owners have knocked out only 1, and like it. Most knock out both.
Some have put on long shot guns and then adapted baffles for them.

My take... And I'm 60 years old
OEM..... Way to soft a sound, and it is a heat issue
1 baffle out.... Not bad sounding..... But still blocking heat escape.
2 baffles out ( like mine).....   Sounds really quite nice, but if a goldwing owner is following, he'll bitch.
Long shot guns no baffles.....   Really sound sweet, but you don't want to follow him if he/she is in the throttle hard a lot.
OEM slash cuts...... They are going to hear you a long ways away
Short shot guns....  Nice at idle..... I don't like them any thing over that.
         Staggered short shotguns..... Brutal

Several owners have also adapted/built/found other items out there with way to many examples to list here. All with a great variance of tone and sound.

Mine are both knocked out I believe according to the previous owner. I would try knocking out one per muffler and see if you like it. I don't mind the loudness but it may be too loud for some, and it's not really loud until you get on it.

Hello,

Trying to sort out #693.  For those of you that have knocked out one baffle, which baffle did you knock out?  The forward one or the aft one.

Thanks,

SuperX693

I haven't knocked mine out yet, but I'm almost sure that you knock out one baffle on both mufflers.
I'm going to do it this winter.

Superx693....
Me?
I'd knock out back first to try and mellow it deeper.......IF I were to knock out only one/muffler...
