Stalling
« on: September 16, 2013, 09:59:55 PM »
Hi.... I bought #1292 a couple of months ago. The bike had about 280 miles on it (it's a '99). The bike runs well of idle and even idles good. It stalls when stopping, or when stopped. It restarts easily, so I put Seafoam is the tank and this seems to have helped a bit. Has anyone else had this problem? The bike seems to run hot (from my experience with air-cooled V's) but the stalling occurs even when just off warm up. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Ken

Hey Ken, Welcome.
Although I've not experienced this I've heard some others mention the IAC which could cause this symptom. That's where I would start, but I recommend waiting until the others with more experience chime in.

Check grounding. It can be caused by the failure to clean powder coating out of the threads where ground wire is attached to the bike. I added a ground cable between the engine and the right motor mount. Several bikes have burned due to improper grounding. It can cause engine problems such as stalling. Generally, check electrical.

I also had a flawed o-ring in a fuel injector that caused engine problems. Unusual problem but easy to fix. Leaking fuel mixed with air and was sucked into air filter.

Kenh,
With your low miles..... These also come to mind from days past...

Is your "tune" the factory tune......    That original tune was so lean, it'd have tendencies to do this.
Does it have the updated aircleaner bracket?   First out of the factory, would crack, and create all sorts of problems including yours. Vacuum leaks first come to mind....
AIC and grounding can also be the culprit as stated.....

Thanks for the responses. I spent a lot of time combing this web site and I learned a great deal. I will probably make all improvements at once as a project. This web-site is a great resource. Thanks, Ken

Check the rubber vacuum cap on the throttle body behind the air cleaner... They rot after a few years due to heat and time... Put a few spares in your parts stash..

And don't go try finding a rubber replacement when a nice vinyl one will last much longer

Hey Bruce... a FYI... I replaced with the red vinyl and guess what? It popped off twice when I rode in the rain (A slight IACV back spit) So... I got me one of them there gin-u-wine flat top rubber caps from my local Excelsior-Henderson Super X repair shop and no more problems!!!
Granted, the rubber will last a couple of years and then wear out....
