Brake Pads
« on: October 23, 2013, 09:38:09 PM »
I noticed there is virtually no difference in appearance between the front pads, and the rear pads for these bikes, other than the number of vertical grooves in them (Two in the front pads, one in the rear). Are they interchangeable?
The reason I ask is that the rears on 741 were down to metal, and I only had a set of fronts. I put them on, no problem and they stop the bike just fine. But will there be some kind of problem down the road?

Honestly Mike I don't think there is....
several folks in the past were selling pads for our X's.... with no reference to front or back... In fact I think I may have bought a set and used them...

maybe someone else knows...

They are identical in shape but the rear pad material is harder than the front.
Rear pads will often have a gold/copper sheen that is not on the front pads.

Thanks Marty and Bruce, I should probably expect them to wear a little faster than the ones that were intended for the rear, right? Although I don't notice any performance difference on braking, I'll keep a closer eye on wear.

Wear really depends on riding style.  Lots of us old folks learned to ride on bikes that had no or weak front brakes so have bad habits.  When I was teaching the MSF course we always tried to stress the need for even braking.  A quick look at my inventory stats shows we sell slightly more rear pads than front.

Get a spare set and have them in stock... If you ride, You'll need them one day... get some Rotors too!
