Cam Cover Screws Loose

When I visited Atlantic EH for the Roast 'N Ride, I remember Jamie mentioning screws for the lower cam cover coming loose. Well, sure enough, 741 suffers from this issue.
  I notice there was seepage from the cam cover gaskets, so I took the cam cover off, and there was one of the screws laying in the head. It had been there so long, it wore two dimples in the head and on the edge of the lower cam cover. Thank goodness it didn't get into the cam gears. Only one other screw was actually loose, the rest were tight.
  Anybody else run into this? Is it always the same location that comes out?

I also had. One come loose very similar...... found it when I had to replace bead gasket

had two bikes that this happened...caught just in time too  on rear cylinder ...both bikes ...replaced
with longer bolts with the rest of them too

   Well, I just finished pulling the rear cover, and same thing: one screw out, one loose. I did not put longer screws in, as the threads seemed to have plenty of engagement. I did, however, clean and apply Loctite to them. My guess is that since the screws that are loosening up are directly above the exhaust port, the heating and cooling of the head and covers in that area might have something to do with it.
   This whole thing makes me wonder if I should pull the covers on 901, even thought there is no seeping as of yet.
   BTW, Bob, I got the logos, they look great! Can't wait to apply them to my van!

This might be a wise winter project. Can I pull the covers off with the engine in the frame?

Yes, but just barely. You'll have to remove the rear engine mount shaft and the left front mount to lower the engine enough to get a hex into the cover bolts. I used a cut-off allen with a 5/16 box ratchet to get to the hard to reach bolts.
