Hmm...well...I spent all afternoon sorting fasteners.
I have (20) 1/4 x 0.75 that are supposed to go to the valve covers. From the manual, i should have a quantity of (26) (13 each). I only have (20). When I count the flange heights, there should only be (12) of the shorter screws per cover. At least one that was counted as a short was actually a long grip (1.0).
I also have (16) 1/4 x 1.0. According to the parts manual, there should only be four of those per head for a total of eight. That leaves me a surplus of 8 fasteners. That leads me to believe the head was assembled with some of the longer length in the wrong holes and the remaining eight still go somewhere else. While I could have reasonable lost some screws in 15 years, I certainly didn't inherit additional EH screws in that same time.
I only disassembled one engine (both heads and cylinders, scavenge pump and timing case opened). All of these fasteners are stamped EH. My new cylinder head is new (no screws except the eight holding the cam caps). I bought no other fasteners.
The timing case, scavenge pump cover and pump screws are all accounted for and bagged with their parts.
I can't make sense of this, except to assume the longer screws were used in random spots on my valve covers. I measure almost every one of the holes to be deeper than 1.1" with the cover flange in place. I've already tried and it snugs up fine, regardless of grip length.
