engine breather puking issues
« on: February 26, 2017, 04:35:01 PM »
has anyone considered relocating the engine breather to the valve covers or timing chain tunnels?

I was considering using an automotive pcv valve with a fitting on each head by the intake manifold a t fitting in the middle with the valve between the t and the air box

Well Jack... that's an interesting idea...
In fact I know someone who plumbed it back into the primary case, works well, and looks good....

All of this is ok, as long as you also design something into the plumbing that will release the crank case excess gasses....    the primary case guy put I believe a check ball valve into the system, that would let the gasses escape, but no oil out...

Another X owner I know designed his to puke right back into the oil fill hose. He also used some sort of flapper valve/check ball valve to let the gasses escape, but no oil.

Be aware, this can be tricky.... you don't want your valve to gum up or get sticky, so it has to stay clean.

I"m pretty simple, and just run my puke pipe out the back under the fender behind the tire. My X doesn't puke very often at all. Others are more prone for what ever reason. Fill your X to what it likes for an oil level, and you'll proabably be good to go. I've found that each of the X's I've worked on like/dislike how much oil is in the engine differently.
As I stated earlier today... a good measure ment for me to start with is 3 quarts and around 6 oz.  if it don't puke, add an oz. and so forth.

My bike is a very early build, like #14, was a factory demonstrator model and thus likely abused in that when I pulled the tranny cassette to rebush it is found a couple tablespoons of aluminum in the bottom of the oil reservoir.  This tells me my pistons are scuffed.  Not good.  Despite this I've never had issue one with oil carry over into breather.  Mine still has the original air filter and it is spotless and breather hose still runs up there.  I did not install the pick up tube in the primary as I don't plan on idling on the kick stand.  I put in 4 qts on a bone dry system and it was in the middle of the cross hatch following the factory recommended method for checking oil, i.e. 15-20 seconds at 2500 rpm then shut down checking on side stand.

Guess I'm lucky or scuffed bores is what you need to keep blow by down (ya right).  I just don't see why everyone has so much issue with this.  Mine is fairly low miles at under 9k yet.

Rich...
You are not the only one.... I've heard several owners say no puke issues....

I myself have put an anti puke device (pipe) in the vent hole inside the primary. It's basically a piece of aluminum conduit, formed and rigged wit a flange to mount in the vent hole.
Idea being the vent hole is basically a backstop to catch any oil the clutch tosses.
My alumunum pipe, takes the vent opening out away from clutch. I fill full4 quarts everytime... With no common X puking. I can puke a little under full throttle, sometimes. I'm pretty sure it's when all oil surges to back of primary, and floods that area.
And plus the old factory story, that engineering sent down a note to assembly line. I do not know if it's true, but heard the note toldassembly to align the rings on the Pistons.

I know when I pulled my rear jug, m rear Pistons rings were within a few degrees of each other, and I strongly suspect the front is the same.
Mine 525, was 310 off the line...
