New Deadwood special owner.
« on: March 17, 2017, 09:14:45 AM »
Greetings folks.
Last Saturday I travelled over to Bromsgrove nr Birmingham (UK) to look at 2 EHs. There are probably less than 10 in the UK so it was something of a coincidence to find 2 for sale within 5 miles of each other.
I bought the better of the two, a 2000 Deadwood special (bike # 1689) Its in pretty good shape, only the wheel rim chrome is flaking off. Its done approx 18000 miles.

It has been over here since 2007; the previous owner had sadly died, I bought it from his brother.

My interest in these bikes goes back a few years to when I owned one of the 6 original Weslake DOHC V-twin engines. We built it into a land-speed racer ant took it to Bonneville speed-week in 2012.
Story here: http://www.ccd-briz.com/Bonneville_2012.html

When we got it home, the electrics were dead. I suspect a faulty ignition switch. We did get it going once and I took it for a short ride. Seems OK. Have not had time to see whats up yet. The sidestand also got bent whilst it was tied into the truck. Straightened it up OK, once I got the pivot pin out!

Plans are to lighten things up a bit. Crashbar, footboards, front fender will be taken off & stored. Might swap on a conventional frontend eventually.

When I can get Photobucket to upload pics, I'll post some.

Welcome Briz!
Sounds like the X is in good hands. Yes, please do share some photos when you get a chance. BTW, what did you do with the Weslake powered bike you had, still have it? I'd love to see pictures of that as well.

Hi Briz,

Sounds like you have quite a shop!
The Salt Lake experience sounds like a real trip.
Too bad the motor had so many bugs in it.  Hopefully 1689 won't provide you with as much work, unless you want it to ;)

My bike was "choppered" at one time but has the fenders and whatnot now.  Not close to stock, but basically still an X.

What did the guy who bought the engine from you plan for it?

Briz...
There is a fellow Englander that maybe in contact with you who frequents this web site... John Kane..
He has 2 X's, .... He has some knowledge ...   and probably would enjoy meeting up with another X owner...

Thanks guys. Yeah, be good to contact John Kane.
Heres the pics.

Also going to go for more discrete turn signals and some louder mufflers. The stockers are past their best and its just too quiet?
Anyone know what effect this would have on the fuel injection?

Briz...
from the pix, it appears to be in pretty good shape....
as for the exhaust....  grab a long rod (longer than the mufflers), if it runs all the way to the header pipe inside the muffler, the baffles have been knocked out,..... If not, pull the mufflers and knock them out.... I'd guess a hi percentage of us Americans run that way, and they sound nice.
It was one of the first actions we did to help get the heat out of the engine in early days...   with a nice tone...
the baffles are nothing more than freeze caps, spot welded inside....
If they are already out, and you want more noise.. .... well each to his own.... hee hee hee. There are OEM slash cuts, long shot guns, and short shot guns, and the notorious, staggered short shot guns.  Plus the array of owners with custom....
enjoy!!

On 307 I mounted a set of V&H slip ones i believe were intended for a softail or sportster. Very few mods necessary,  did not have to modify stock muffler mount.  Shielding fit nicely to stock.  They are fsirly raspy and  don't sound as couped up as the rodded stockers.   If you'd like a p/n i can provide.

Thanks guys.
I have a pair of screamin' eagle turnout mufflers here that I will try first.
Looks like someone has changed the 'bars at some stage, its obvious because the wires and brake & clutch lines are about 3" too short! I'll probably change to some mild apehangers at some stage along with braided lines and internal wires.
But this is supposed to be something to ride this summer rather than being a project. Got more than enough project bikes on the go right now.

All this came about because a friend has insisted on buying the HD evo chop I was building for myself this year!
