AJ Fago from what I understand was the first to discover the wobble on high milage X's from the rear shock.... he went into great detail about his story at the Deadwood get together.
So much detail, I got scared on the way home, as my bike at that time was riding horrible. I was certain, it too was my issue. My issue turned out to be "tired" tires....
Although we haven't gotten blue on the road yet, pretty sure we figured out the wobble.....
When we did the neck bearing update, my Nephew over torqued first bearing and grenaded it in the neck. So we replaced with another bearing at that time. All last summer, he has had this wobble.
We took apart his triple tree for what seems like the 20th time.... and 4 loose ball bearings fell out the bottom. Pretty sure that was the issue, they were sitting on bearing seat, blocking seating. When this initially was all going down, I was working on my X at the same time, so no I didn't get to check out what he was doing near as close as I wished.
I know it may seem it takes us a while to get things done here with our X's .... but Nephew Devin is a father of 3 still in school, and a hi stress job, all of which take up a lot of time. So it takes a while for us to get together. Devin wants to know how to work on these beasts, and he is more every time.
I've been teaching him "soft touches" which is a challenge with his huge hamhock hands..... LOLOLOL
AJ's story spooked me so bad, I purchased 6 rear shocks off ebay earlier in the year, as $36 each shipped to my door. Couldn't resist.
Something to note as a learning curve for me on the neck/triple tree....
Way back in the old timey days, when I was a believer in all things said by Bobby (Xman) Baldwin. His instructions said to toss the "Lock Nut" in your neighbors yard. We had 3 X's at that time, and I tossed all 3 of them in this update.
Greg then did his research and found a proper bearing for this application. In his instructions shown here on this site, he goes into detail about measurements (a machinists point of veiw, I'd say), and made mention that basically there was shimming required.
Now I have no idea of any measurements in this area, but I do know that our X's are to a point everyone a prototype. I did Gregs bearing update with no issues.... but figured out that with no lock nut, things were going to be different. Basically, it came time to the triple tree bottom surface run parallels to top of the dust cover. If it isn't parallel, its not solving anything. Devins blue on the other hand we struggled with getting everything lined up parallel. Partially was due to the pressd/spot welded nut in the dust cover..... his had come apart with the big squish. Because of that it took some fooling around,... pretty sure we got it now. He ordered a new nut/dust cover from Seastrom (EHparts.net)
