So, what winter projects does everyone have going?
« on: January 04, 2023, 05:47:49 PM »
Those of us who are blessed to live in the frozen tundra you call "the North" frequently use winter as an excuse to tear down, rebuild, renew, and generally hang out in the garage and drink beer all winter long.

I'm knee deep in replacing some leaking gaskets on my heads, replacing wheel bearings, and am considering going after my neck bearings. Wondering what everyone else is up to. Please post pics. It's lonely out here in the garage. ;-)

We got ol blue up on rack....   Mystery wobble needs addressing.
The ready for up coming season.
Then mine... 525 for winter maintenance.

On the side getting 71 Honda 350 road worthy .  Barn find with 2000 miles. Pretty rough barn by my guess.

Mystery wobble? Have you looked at the shock? Yes, the shock.. on the swing arm. Take a look at the club meeting minutes where Jamie talks about this.
Apparently there have been a few bikes with a mystery wobble that has been resolved with a shock.

AJ Fago from what I understand was the first to discover the wobble on high milage X's from the rear shock....   he went into great detail about his story at the Deadwood get together.
So much detail, I got scared on the way home, as my bike at that time was riding horrible.  I was certain, it too was my issue.     My issue turned out to be "tired" tires....

Although we haven't gotten blue on the road yet, pretty sure we figured out the wobble.....

When we did the neck bearing update, my Nephew over torqued first bearing and grenaded it in the neck. So we replaced with another bearing at that time. All last summer, he has had this wobble.

We took apart his triple tree for what seems like the 20th time....   and 4 loose ball bearings fell out the bottom. Pretty sure that was the issue, they were sitting on bearing seat, blocking seating. When this initially was all going down, I was working on my X at the same time, so no I didn't get to check out what he was doing near as close as I wished.

I know it may seem it takes us a while to get things done here with our X's .... but Nephew Devin is a father of 3 still in school, and a hi stress job, all of which take up a lot of time. So it takes a while for us to get together. Devin wants to know how to work on these beasts, and he is more every time.

I've been teaching him "soft touches" which is a challenge with his huge hamhock hands.....  LOLOLOL

AJ's story spooked me so bad, I purchased 6 rear shocks off ebay earlier in the year, as $36 each shipped to my door. Couldn't resist.

Something to note as a learning curve for me on the neck/triple tree....

Way back in the old timey days, when I was a believer in all things said by Bobby (Xman) Baldwin. His instructions said to toss the "Lock Nut" in your neighbors yard. We had 3 X's at that time, and I tossed all 3 of them in this update.

Greg then did his research and found a proper bearing for this application. In his instructions shown here on this site, he goes into detail about measurements (a machinists point of veiw, I'd say), and made mention that basically there was shimming required.

Now I have no idea of any measurements in this area, but I do know that our X's are to a point everyone a prototype. I did Gregs bearing update with no issues.... but figured out that with no lock nut, things were going to be different.  Basically, it came time to the triple tree bottom surface run parallels to top of the dust cover. If it isn't parallel, its not solving anything. Devins blue on the other hand we struggled with getting everything lined up parallel. Partially  was due to the pressd/spot welded nut in the dust cover..... his had come apart with the big squish. Because of that it took some fooling around,... pretty sure we got it now. He ordered a new nut/dust cover from Seastrom (EHparts.net)

Well, thanks for that man, now it looks like I'll be looking onto the fork bearing update. Wish I could go back in time to 5 minutes before I read your post, then not read it because ignorance is bliss. ;-)
I'll be calling for advice lol.

 You got me giggling Frank....
There is a sense of urgency on our X's .....  but with age, I don't get too awlful excited anymore.  "make sure we get this....  make sure we get that...."
All of it is important in the long run. And some of it is life threatening.

But it took me pretty close to 20 years to get all of my updates done. And I did all of them myself (other than machining tranny). I'm pretty proud of that...
I'd suspect most of the active in the community owners, got the updates down much quicker than that.

No matter... feel free to call any time. Greg too for that matter.

It was great finally putting a face to your name at the "Dells"...
