[solved] Aggressive Misfire under Acceleration
« on: May 06, 2019, 08:34:54 AM »
I've finally gotten the bike out of storage and ridden for the second time this season, my first ride was flawless, rode about 25 uneventful miles on the highway. I started the bike up yesterday and it rode as normal for about 5 minutes. Then as I was getting onto the freeway it started to horribly misfire and shut off. I was able to limp it back, having to restart it about 20 times, but I made it home alright.

I assumed it was the gas (still from last season), so I drained it and replaced it with some new fuel. After that it continued to misfire horribly but didn't shut off.

Does this sound like a case of old gas or am i likely looking at a larger issue here?

Does the engine light come on?  Have you been able to read any error codes stored in the ECU?

I had something similar happen to me a couple of years ago.  In my case, it was a bad coil for the front cylinder.

Also sounds like a loose battery cable.
Start with simple stuff first...
Our battery cables are notorious for coming loose.
On 2 of our Xs I ended up soldering the bolts so they wouldn't come loose

Thanks guys, it was definitely the loose battery cable. Thanks so much for the pointers. I was frantically looking at all the stuff that could be wrong online instead of actually looking at the bike. Seriously thanks again.

The OEM battery cables just don't mix with the engine vibration frequencies.
Jamie/Marty found some battery cable that has no problems with the vibes..
They work very well

Roger that Bruce.   I fought broken/loose cables before and the ultra flexible cables are necessary on these vibrating machines.
