Hi! I'm a newbie here
« on: July 02, 2022, 12:22:56 AM »
Hi!  I'm a newbie here, and do not currently own an EH, but I do know where there are 2 new 2000 models (not pre-owned) sitting at a dealer in NM.  I have made an offer of 14k for one of them,. and am keeping my fingers crossed awaiting a call from the salesman (who had to talk to the manager before he could say 'yes'  They want 18.2k for it.  To my knowledge, there has been no servicing done on it, it's just been sitting there.  Would like info concerning whether or not this is a good deal, and whether I should ride it before getting upgrades done (which would probably mean trailering it to Minn.)  Any feedback would be appreciated!  Thanks.

Ride Safe;

In my opinion, no that is not a good deal. You didn't state that it was anything special, IE a redwood special, with that, your price range is going to be "standard".
I try to keep up with market values of our beauties. And the last X I saw with no miles, was around $11000 range. And it was exceptional.
I'm assuming 0 miles or very close to it.

An X today with all upgrades done (roughly $3000 if hired out) and reasonable miles for 20+ years old bike, are running in the 5-7000$ range if in good shape.  Reasonable miles to me would be anything between 10000 - 50000.
Its not uncommon to see X's with more miles, and being very nice, but with those miles, and not knowing the owner or bike, the price comes down. As always there will be exceptions.

Abused or not maintained?...   3-4$.

Exceptional condition up to 10.

If this is the case, it's been sitting over 20 years.
I wouldn't even attempt to start it, without pulling tank and fuel system off, and thoroughly cleaning and most likely relining tank. It may very well start and run even if this isn't done, but I promise you it will bite you soon, and most likely in the wrong place and time.

Tires will look like new, but will be junk.

Obviously an oil change would be in order also.

My X has just turned 50000, its a 99, standard black. Nothing exceptional. I feel very nice condition, and runs well. Most likely not worth more than $5000 if I was lucky. But I'd never sell it at this time for any kind of money. It just grabs my heart strings. All of the upgrades are done on 525, and it took me most of the 20 years to get them all done on my budget, and I did them.

There is a substantial number of us in the community, that really want the market numbers to go up. They want their stable to be worth more, than the last 10 years. Not as an investment, but I suspect more for the collectability values. I like that idea, but it would probably knock me out of the X world market place completely. My budget is pretty small.

It does mess with your head in public talking to someone who doesn't know anything about super Xs, and you tell them you can find them a very nice rider that looks great for around $7000 or less.

Hope this helps with your decision.

Bruce

I would say that it depends:
This far into the game, I would only buy a new one if it was going to be a static display bike. Or maybe as a Jay-Leno-runner: you have it ready and put a few hundred miles a year on it.

Once you buy it, replace the tires and a few other things and start riding it, it's going to become an instant $3-5K motorcycle. There are clean, running bikes out there that have already received some or all of the updates.

Not saying you won't work on them too but, you'll have a lot of change in your pocket. It's a 22-23 year old motorcycle. Unbelievably, we are in better shape with spare parts than many other bikes of similar age. Nonetheless, I wouldn't assume its a brand-new motorcycle and you're gong to ride it cross-country without issues.

How many red wood specials were made? Where would I find one?

I don’t have my data files handy but from memory I want to say there were ten or eleven? I may edit this in the future to correct it.

As for where to find one, all I can suggest is keep an eye here and on Bookface. I’ve not seen any of them change hands publicly in awhile.

There were only 9 redwoods made...one was a black deadwood and the guy bought redwood tins and installed them..I sold him the tank

moons ago ...N.C. guy ... so by real means  only 9 were done...one blue ...one silver  ...the people who have them will hold on to them,

the factory did make up 3 sets of stock tins that were a different red than the redwoods...silver pin stripe, gold pin stripe and white

pin stripe... gary thomforde  had a set on his bike, sadly he passed after his accident with that bike...tins were trashed....have not seen

any other tins for sale

Phil Marks had a redwood and a G/O spare.... he just sold both recently to a guy in California?. Sorry, don't believe I ever heard his name. He also bought a DWS from Lew?
This guy something like Greg here...   was buying up one of each the way I heard it.
I talk to Phil regularly, it was within the last year. Phil got good money for that redwood compared to todays market.
Now he only has his custom and Jumpers 3 wheeler.

I would very much like to acquire one of each as well. I have multiples in a few colors but lots of holes. And I don't know much about any special/unique bikes.

However I believe I've found the right place.

Thank you guys for all the information!

Voo Doo child list on this site for sale is a heavily customed X. I knew the owner via email before he passed many years ago. He built this one and the "buffaloe" bike.
From conversations and all the photos I've seen of both of these bikes, they were very well built.... gorgeous.
I'm hoping the current owner gets more money for voodoo child than market value. I see he's asking #17500, which is way hi for market.
