Speedometer Stopped Working
« on: August 13, 2024, 10:42:22 AM »
Good morning folks,

Been researching here what may have happened to my speedometer/odometer/trip meter? All of which stopped working completely. Tachometer still works, all lights and dash lights good, fuses all tested good, wires and connections under dash look good.
Noticed a thread here from 5 yrs ago that the Road Speed Sensor could be the issue?
Just wondered if others had this problem and similar success before getting the one sensor I don`t have in my inventory (figures)?

Yep, I had one that had an intermittent road speed sensor. It would work for maybe 100 miles, it would get warm and stopped working.

You have to pull the mufflers and the rear header, then remove the electrical box cover to get to it. Once those are off, it's easy to swap out. It's a good time to check and upgrade the grounds while you're in there.

Thanks Greg, I did read your past posts.
When speaking with Mike at EH Parts, he mentioned that other symptoms should possibly be occurring other than the speed/odo display on dash. With that said, I did notice the motor running `Ruff'. Like a bad tune was in there. Do you remember any change like that? Maymake sense as the sensor is not feeding proper info to ECM to manage fuel/air/etc?
Sounds like I need to get one though.

No, mine ran completely normal. I was just losing the speedometer and odometer.
Are there new sensors still available? If so, that's awesome.

So, to follow up with my recent issue, and for other`s searching for a similar thread, I just got back from a short test ride after installing the new Speed Sensor. Yes, I`m back in business. Speedo and ODO are both working again. But maybe more importantly, I want to mention that my bike ran very noticeably better with the new sensor (Best way to describe is a good tune compared to a bad tune). And thinking back before I noticed the speedo and odo stopped, I believe it was not running as good as it is now. Is it possible this sensor was sending out less than proper speed info to the ECM before the speedo/odo gauge actually stopped?
