Im a new owner
« on: April 05, 2013, 09:54:51 PM »
Hi all I am a new Super X owner, as of today. I am not scared to fix anything as I was an automotive mechanic for 17 years and I understand each vehicle has its unique challenges. Knowledge is the key. I have owned a variety of bikes over the last 25 years (and cars) too many to count actually. I have done all of the work on all of them. This Super X is my dream bike. It was laid down at vary low speeds. So their is some damage to the fenders and gas tank etc.., I am looking forward to slowly (I am not a rich man) repairing this damage. It rides just fine and appears to have had many updates. I however would like some advice on what to look for? Also (again I am new here) if their is a repair book available - where is the best place to look for one?

Boomer.... WELCOME...
here's the location of the shop manual which is on this very site, its downloadable, and or I can get you an address to order the burned CD.....

http://www.excelsiorhenderson.com/ehwebsite/pages/tech/pdf/EH_Factory_Service_Handbook_X.pdf

This site has a ton of info! And so do these others: SuperXOwners, and  http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/Excelsior-Henderson-Resource-Board/  (this site is the most active)
it will pay to study up a bit  Boomer, as we as a group have tackled issues since the doors close.... so spend a bit of time just looking around on all of these sites....

Many of the updates cannot be seen by eye... you'll either have to discover it, ask who worked on it, or open it up. ....
the triple tree nut adjustment is an easyone..... put a very lite grasp on the  handle bars (don't let go)... and try accelerating or coasting under 40 mph.... if it isn't right somewhere's between 35 and 0 those bars will go nuts.
look for extra grounds (not OEM) around starter housing or off the battery... this is a good thing.   Check out those tires...  if they are OEM, they are way over due for new ones.....
Wet spot below clutch cover and/or low fluid in master cylinder for the clutch.

As of an oil pick up tube..... you could put a manual oil pressure guage on the sending unit port, and start the bike on the kick stand.... I don't recommend it....

I don't know how long it sat, but apparently things are good if its running good. We're discovering that more and more X's are sitting with ethanol in them.... plugging up the fuel systems....

Boomer hope this get you started!!    Ask here or the yahoo resource site..... we're a good group...!!

Thanks wytfut. This will keep busy me busy for awhile. So far most of the things you suggested check out. So to me that is a good sign. It has only sat since November when it went down. One more quick question - one of my first order of business is an oil change, this one has run on a synthetic oil for years. What would you recommend  for oil?

In general, most of us are using either mobile1 20-50 vtwin oil, or amsoil 20-50 vtwin.  I suspect others who don't have acess to these are using other motorcycle synthetics and adding ZDDP.

I recommend the first 2 choices.....

Thought of another look see if you've got a lift. Pull that rear wheel, and check that rear hub.... Look for a sleeve around the bearing or look in the hole to see how many bearings.... If its been up dated there probably 3.

You also need to know what tune it has for the mapping.......

Ask that previous owner some questions, it'll be nice to know...

You can find an accurate and up-to-date list of what goes wrong and why along with recommendations for improving your bike's reliability and longevity on our website.  Look under Service Dept.  at Superxparts.com.

Welcome and enjoy.
