2000 Excelisor Henderson new in crate

Hello folks,  My name is Russel.  I ride a Honda Rune and a Yamaha FJ1200 and have come across a 2000 Excelisor Henderson Super x still in the crate, never been touched.  I have noticed it for sale for almost 2 years.  It has always been priced at $9,900.  I have been told that I could get it for $8,500.  Would folks say that this would be a good buy?  I am aware of the items that would need to be fixed or gone through which would cost additional money.

2nd part of question.  What kind of horsepower and torque does this motorcycle have?  Are there any mods that can be done to increase HP or torque?   I am guessing that HP is around 70HP  is that accurate?

I live in Columbia and Charleston SC.  Is there any folks around here with one?

      Lots of variables with this discussion..... So here my opinion and thoughts.
      For a crated X, thats a pretty nice price, according to published sales that I watch.
      Understand off market private sales can variate hi/lo extremes. I do hear about those also on occasion.
      HP is around 65.... But with the small numbers built, If memory serves me right, I believe I've heard as hi as 72 on dynos. Off hand I don't know the numbers on torque, but its pretty hefty.... They pull hard OEM around 3k rpms.
      H5 cams (getting hard to find now and pricey), and some other tweaking will get it up there .....   80+.
      Was at Jamie Jones last spring, and was very proud of a fresh one he built, that had just dyno'd 100.  This of course was much more than just doing the cams.
      Dave Lockhart and Ham LaForge both from N. C. Area and Tony Dominy of Georgia area..... Would be some great resourcing for your area. I'm sure there are more, maybe closer..... Check the registry on this site, and superxowners site..

$8500 in the crate?! Get it.. Do the basic mods for around 3500-4000 depending on what you have done. Parts and help are available...If your a good wrench and want the education of fixing the Super X, Ask all the questions you want both here and on the Yahoo Resource Boards... You'll find that most Xer's are more than happy to teach a "Newbie" Just remember.. The New Guy buys the Beer... Pop.. Or COFFEEEE!!!!

I was given a warning that these 15 year old crate bike may require a great deal more work than just the upgrades. Think about it, why has it been for sale for so many years with no takers? I wont mention any names, just take it with a grain of salt.

It might be a better purchase removed from the crate and running. I think so.  I though I got mine cheap with under 2k miles and running like a top. Less than 1/2 that price. Only a few of the upgrades done. Turns out, as amazing as these machines are, they don't command the high price you would expect. Not yet anyway.

There is one for sale on this forum right now, 100% upgraded and looking very nice in that same price range. Not sat deteriorating for 15 years in a box.

You got to see the chrome. OMG, it is all peeling off most of these original bikes. That is not considered a required mechanical upgrade but sure kills the pride of ownership and re-sale.

It might be cool  for a museum display. Heck it is still 1/2 price of a similar new HD. If you are worried about it enough to ask, I would stay clear. This should be your hobby/mad money not taken out of family budget as an investment.

     I'm not sure what other issues change with time that you are mentioning here.....
     Other than issues that would effect ANY/ALL breeds and types of vehicles that have set for long lengths of time.
     The gasoline that the factory has put in the tank..... will be a mess..... and most probably have taken the liner out of it somewheres.   WITH that, I don't start any X that has been sitting any length of time with gas in it. I pull the tank and clean it, check out the fuel pump and clean it. Too many of us, (myself included in the past) have just got the battery up, and cranked it over, only to plug up the injectors immediately.
      Tires cracking with age. Seals on the brake system. Chrome issues. etc...... all common with sitting around.

      if there is something  spectacular or huge that we need to know about.... please bring it forward here..... those sort of X's are still out there, and we maybe able to prevent another issue, which is what our little community has been all about since the beginning.

I think you covered it.  There was supposed to be gas in tanks when they were put in the crate.  So yea, fuel system. And the chrome is uniquely bad to EH. Single not triple plated. I saw a pic someplace a guy keep his a decade in the living room. Minty nice. Mine has had normal storage and some normal moisture exposed in unheated garage. Not  good. So; where the crate has resided is a big factor, I would think.

Short story, I have no addition knowledge.

I prefer my low mileage, new tires, motor mounts, fresh oil and bike that was rode a bit from time to time. Unless the bike and crate and all go in a museum,  I dont see the advantage of paying double for a crate and getting a bunch of work just to get running (upgrades excluded).  How long does it take to ride 2,000 miles and depreciate away the crate premium?

Ive helped a few people purchase X's over the years....
2 reasons for wanting a crated X...   Its unmolested by anyone who doesnt know, which can be a good feeling to have. And down the road it is going to be worth something if left untouched.

Im currently shopping for 2 possible buyers...  And it doesnt take much to notice that the under 10k mile Xs are becoming more rare all the time ..... If you are shopping for "good used".
BUT if you are lucky enough to know the bike... None of that matters. For example... Currently on this site is one of the nicest Xs i have ever ridden for sale. And it has 28k miles. Im not afraid of that X at all. I know Jim, and Ive ridden it. Jims 2 prices are a bargain.... Who ever ends up with Jim blue baby is going to be very happy.

Another side....  I helped buddy buy one in council bluffs. Gorgeous r/o. Got it for 4.5k with 4k miles. Didnt get 500 miles on it when it spun the mains. We didnt know the bike or history... So test ride and looks looked all good. Its a new bike now... Wonderful, but was a head ache at first.

My point is we all take a chance no matter....  But there is no reason to shy away from one or the other. A very nice benefit of this comminity, somebody probably knows that bike and you can ask here.
