Oil Pressure Switch Leaking
« on: April 16, 2014, 06:30:06 PM »
:o Last year, my oil pressure switch started leaking while I was a hundred miles from home. I purchased a new one at the local Napa and borrowed the necessary socket. I put almost 2000 miles on the bike since then.
Last weekend, I rode up to northern California (400 miles away) and once again, the switch started leaking. Once again, the local Napa matched it up and I borrowed a tool.  I rode home (300 miles) with no problems, rode it to work this morning with no problems. I arrived home with a.....you guessed it...leaking oil pressure switch.
I did a search on the Yahoo forum, and found mention of a sticking oil pressure regulator valve. Any advice on this topic. Where is the valve located, in the main pump? Does anybody make a heavy duty switch out of titanium that can withstand EH oil pressure?

Thanks......

I now have both oil pumps out of it, but I don't see a valve as pictured in the EH diagrams. :-\

Is it just me or does it look like the valve is between the pumps on page 86? Haven't been in this far yet, but I think I will be soon. I have the opposite problem, low oil pressure.

Mike,

Forget the NAPA oil pressure switch.  I only get a few miles out of those.  I don't know why but my bike has an appetite for oil pressure switches.  I have bought H-D switches that last 1000-2000 miles but I have the best luck with E-H switches.  I usually get 2500 plus miles out of one.  I have gotten around 10,000 out of the first one.  I just carry a spare with me.  Last year I changed mine in the old factory parking lot during our group EH ride.

Thanks Dennis. Since I have it apart, I still want to check my pressure regulator. I wonder why I've never had a problem with 741? Perhaps some bikes had the pressure regulator set a little higher than others.

It is down behind the lower pump... you actually have to get down and look in there...
I've used needle nose to grab it out.... clip pliers would also probably work.....

interesting note.... some of these bikes just really like to eat oil pressure sending units...

Dennis..... I remember Tim Breidenbachs X would also eat one during any long trip.... so he also carried a spare.....
not that is a big deal, as a lot of owners carry a spare....

of our 3 X's.... only one has spit one out. It was at Sturgis... Jake's Blue.... and we ran to the local hard ware store and put a pipe plug in temporary....

I just think is a quirk to certain bikes.  I put an oil pressure gauge on my once.  I forget what it ran for pressure, but I did not think it was so high that it concerned me.  When one of the NAPA senders failed it oiled down everything on the right side pretty good.  I smelled it that time.  It was shooting oil out about 1'.  Strange I have no rust issues on the right side :D

Hey Dennis! Always good to lube the Super X... Wouldn't want any surface rust building up... Heheheh...

Yes, 901 has a well lubed right side as well. My right saddle bag is shinier that the left, too! And the bugs, they just slide right off! Maybe I should keep the leaking switch.....
I got the regulator out, thanks for the info Bruce. It moves freely, and nothing blocking the orifice in the end plate. I put it all back together with a new switch. Napa was kind enough to warranty it for me. I WILL be carrying a spare and a socket with me from now on! :D
