Check your master cylinders
« on: July 04, 2010, 09:38:11 AM »
Had occasion to drain clutch master cylinder and found tons of gunk in the bottom. Cleaned it out with no problem but anybody who hasn't been in there might want to check them.
Don't know what the gunk was but didn't look like it belonged in a master cylinder.

The gunk in your master cylinder is a result of using the wrong brake fluid. Our hydraulic systems require DOT5 Silicone Brake fluid, as stated in your owners manual. DOT3 and DOT4 are glycol-ether based and will attack the rubber seals and lines.

You have not resolved the problem by simply cleaning out the gunk. A proper repair would be to rebuild or replace the master cylinder, hydraulic lines and all other seals in the system or the problem will persist.
