Electrical Problem
« on: July 11, 2014, 07:42:30 PM »
I few weeks ago, I tried to start the bike.  Main switch and engine switch "on", lights came on (as expected) fuel pump primed (as expected) I hit the start button, and all the lights went out instantly and the bike has been dark since.  I have a charged battery.  The voltage across the battery reads 0V only when I turn the main switch to "on".

To begin my trouble shooting, I pulled all the fuses, the problem is in the 5A ignition line.  I pulled the voltage regulator and the instrument cluster out of the circuit to help isolate the fault.  Everything is good up to the starter relay.

The interesting thing is that the start switch isn't in the same circuit save through the main control module or "brain".  I did replace the right side controls in the past, but haven't had a problem until now.  (But I'm not a strong believer in coincidence either.)  Please also note, that I permanently removed the horn fuse due to a fault in that circuit that causes my lights to dim/flash whenever I pushed the horn button.

Any advice on how to proceed is much appreciated.

Please note that I'm self taught with electrical trouble shooting....
and because of that, I take the odd directions/approach at times.... or what some folks would say is odd...

but I'm successful....

looking at the schematic and with what info you tossed.....
I'd be pulling the power latch relay P15 and accessory relay p18 to see if that helps narrow it down.

with your comments towards the right side hand controls.... me myself, I'd be taking that apart... just to double check myself.

with the original issue with the horn, and not that it has anything to do with your current problem.... I'd be looking close at wires around the triple tree back to the fuses along the back bone....

if that can't get it narrowed down closer... I'd then be using the volt meter for circuitry....   to see if anything is running a direct fault to ground that shouldn't. On both ignition circuts....

come on back.... everyone here will help.... if you need it...

Study the Electrical Schematic!! It is your friend....... Don't disconnect everything until you trace the route of the wires.  Look for problem areas. A BARE WIRE IS A BAD THING!!!

I would sure have a close look at the grounds. This has been a problem area on these bikes. I've had grounding problems with both of my bikes as well. Make sure the negative cable and grounds behind the electrical cover are all tight and not corroded .
