Newbie needs advice !
« on: January 10, 2017, 08:44:03 AM »
Well Guys I think I went a little crazy  :(
I bought a  99" Super-X !

I know I paid way to much but I just had to have it after seeing it!
Got it 2 days a go and it looked like a great bike!

It looked really well maintained clean seemed to run well ...
Everything seems to work ok ... I fell in love with it !

But I found after I bought it I was wrong!
It Definitely needs some work !

Main thing I found sofar is the gas tank is really bad !
It rusted bad  :( I know I know I should have checked !
Any Suggestions On How to best Clean it and what to used to SEAL IT ?
What Products work best to clean and seal the tank?

It has a Oil Cooler installed ..
However the fan is on a SWITCH not a temp sensor ?
Anyone have a wiring diagram and what's needed to set it up on a temp sensor ?

Also anyone have a link and / or suggestions on what I need to make sure she is good to go ?
And what to look for ?

Thank Guys !

Congratulations on you purchase and we;come to the EH family.  Hopefully I can offer you a little help in regards to your questions.

First in regards to the temp. sensor for the cooling fan.  It is my understanding that there used to be one, but there was an incident involving a failure of said switch that resulted in a damaged engine which resulted in a lawsuit which led to there no longer being one made.  I have one on 1758 and I just leave it on all the time.

As far as the gas tank I would have to refer you to Atlantic EH in Virginia and talk to Jamie or Marty at 540-298-9310.  They can answer any question you may have as well as get any parts you may need.

I hope this helps get your bike on the road.

Clint

I take it that you mean you leave the "FAN" For the Oil Cooler ON all the time ?

Welcome Erik! Price is relative. If you love the bike the price was good.
For the tank I've used Kreme in the past, works well. Can be a bit labor intense but the results are great.
Let us know what questions you have as you go through the bike.

In our early years.... there was an oil cooler that used a heat sensor to turn on and off the fan. A large number of them were sold.... and the owners for the most part swear by them.
I don't have one, as I didn't have the pennies at that time ....and  later down the road ended up with Jamie/Martys oil cooler. It has a manual on off switch.
To be perfectly honest..... it works great and is very simple. I also prefer its look over some of the others that have been created.
I was on the phone with Jamie just a couple of days ago.... and he has tested and retested these coolers, .... they drop the temp on the oil average around 40 degrees....   Being we were running around 280-285, that is huge, and puts the oil back into operating temp of 235.....   about as perfect as can be done.

As for you fuel tank. I myself have used Tank Creme in the past. Havent used it on any Super X's though. I know a lot of the owners have used tank creme with great results.
Jamie has used it in the past ..... and has had problems with the ethanol breaking down the liner. YES even though the product says its ethanol proof.....
Jamie has his own vendor there on the east coast who now coats all the tanks that he gets in the shop, who uses a commercial product..... IT DOES NOT BREAK DOWN....

I strongly advise, that you do not try to start this X until you have cleaned out all fuel passages to the injectors.

Erik.... that a nice looking X.....

Zap Leather and Cycle in Paynesville, MN dealt in used X's for a few years.

He doesn't do much in parts for them but both the owner (Chuck) and his head mechanic have years of experience with these bikes.

I wonder how many were made. Might be a cool item to have reproduced for the members of the road club. I'll suggest it to our merchandise director.
