a Good Deal?
« on: January 13, 2017, 04:13:39 PM »
Hi!  I'm a newbie here, and do not currently own an EH, but I do know where there are 2 new 2000 models (not pre-owned) sitting at a dealer in NM.  I have made an offer of 14k for one of them,. and am keeping my fingers crossed awaiting a call from the salesman (who had to talk to the manager before he could say 'yes'  They want 18.2k for it.  To my knowledge, there has been no servicing done on it, it's just been sitting there.  Would like info concerning whether or not this is a good deal, and whether I should ride it before getting upgrades done (which would probably mean trailering it to Minn.)  Any feedback would be appreciated!  Thanks.

Ride Safe;
Hank S. :)

Hank....
I'd love to see another new excited owner in super X world.... but you are high for the current market.

Here's one currently on Ebay, that is a little more reasonably priced.....     http://www.ebay.com/itm/2000-Other-Makes-Super-X-/272517747230?forcerrptr=true&hash=item3f7352d21e:g:G3MAAOSwt5hYdXI0&item=272517747230

Its also at a dealership.
 Here in the flatlands, in Columbus NebraXi... there is also a dealership with a brand new one on the floor. His price is also way out of line for the market. Very similar price towards the one you made the offer on.

I can't blame these dealers, as they are trying to get their invested money back. In a general sense, buying from a dealer is OK, as long as you recognize the fact that you educated yourself, and know more about the bike than they do. Very rare, a dealer knows anything about any of the updates required to make these a good safe dependable Motorcycle. Most of the dealerships don't even know about our very active community we have here on www.

As for hauling your bike to your favorite vendor....  A lot of us west of the mississippi have found that shipping the machine is very competitive compared to hauling it yourself. Motel, food, fuel, wear and tear, your time..... plus the return trip twice.....     Shipping to our favorite vender from NebraXi to Virginia, last time i  believe was around 600 1 way. Itd be hard to beat that...

If you do indeed purchase this X, DO NOT try and start it, with out pulling the tank off first and thoroughly cleaning it with a hand full of steel washers and some solvent. Pull that fuel pump, and take it apart and clean it too. Pull the ends of the fuel rail, clean it, and pull injectors, make sure the "in" side is cleaned up.
There are various arguements on this proceedure, but everyone will agree, that an X sitting for more than a year, is going to have grungy fuel issues. YOU do not want to try and pump this crap thru the fuel system.

Now.... I really hope I haven't soured you on X's. But just posting here on this site has exposed you, to the fact you are indeed interested in purchasing an X. Ears have perked up.....
Thru the www, there are multiple "X only" sites with X's for sale. Most of the time from current owners. Just look at the bottom of THIS forum page.

The best bang for you buck in this market? An X with all of the updates already DONE by a reputable vender. Owner is or was an active member of THIS community. Higher the mileage cheaper the price.

Reasoning for purchasing from an active member? Our community is small, Most of its members want to have a good reputation within the community. A lot of our owners own several X's. Some of our members actually do a little wheeling and dealing within the community as a side line.

If you buy private and the owner is outside of the community, again make sure you know more about the X than he does, so you can pin him down on the issues. A very common repy..... "why fix it if it ain't broken...." and "Ive had no problems with that?...."

Hope I helped,

 ;)Hi Bruce and all;
I followed that link to Ebay and that one one looks like a much better deal than the one I was looking at.  Plus, it RUNS!!  The dealer I am working with told me that the major problem with the bike is that no one will finance it, so they are not actively trying to sell it.  I'm hoping my credit union will finance it for me.  One major problem with this...I checked the KBB online, and Excelsior Henderson is not even listed, so there are no numbers that I can give to the credit union verifying its' value.  I might give them a call today and see if they will finance it.  If they will not, I guess I'm out of luck until I can save up a pile of money.  I'll keep you posted.

Ride Safe;

https://www.kbb.com/motorcycles/excelsior-henderson/

http://www.nadaguides.com/Motorcycles/Excelsior-Henderson

also when shopping on ebay TODAY..... just type in the search bar under ALL CATAGORIES...    Excelsior Henderson.... there is another one even cheaper yet with very low miles...  you will pull up with this search about 5 pages of EH items...

please be aware, as above, if new from a dealer..... they most likely do not know what the updates are.
Theyll quite possibly say they are all done..... where as you ask for the documentation, plus ask which ones.
If the updates are not done, and you are not mechanically inclined they are going to cost you around another 3-4k dollars. If you do them yourself, the price will go down substantially.

Wow! with the prices that low, getting a loan from my Credit Union will probably take a miracle.  Plus, they're not 'technically' old enough to be considered a collector's item.  I will try, however, and see what I can come up with.  In other news. I called the salesman this afternoon, and he said that he 'thinks' the service people have de-fueled it, and removed all fluids.  That means (I guess) that that I will have to service it before I attempt to ride it.  I know that it does not have an oil-cooler, so that's going to have to be the first mod I make on it.  Temps in the summer here reach the mid-90's, and I like to ride year-round.  Keeping my fingers crossed!!

Hey Hank,   I can can be on the lookout for ya, along with some of the other guys of course.  Bruce will only give you the best information for your X hunting.  Best I can say is let the group know you're looking and it's only a matter of time.

Last year, there were three GORGEOUS bikes for great prices.

We'll keep an eye out

Thanks, Chade!  I am planning on contacting the dealer and pursuing this again Tuesday (Monday is a bank holiday) and see what happens.  If I can get one for half the price, that would be good!  Thanks for your help.

Bad News...
The dealer will not go below 15.3k for the bike, and I cannot finance it for that price. :-\  Guess i'll have to save my pennies and dimes and keep an eye on Ebay, as well as your site.  Guess that means that those 2 new EH's are going to sit at that dealer for the foreseeable future.  Everyone Ride Safe!!

Future Hopeful Excelsior-Henderson owner.

Quick update...
Nothing on Ebay (except a lot of parts.)  I couldn't figure out Craiglist.  Seems you have to choose a city/area to get ads, and I tried several (NM and Texas).  Couldn't find a thing.  I'll keep looking!
Jumper, how do I contact the 2 gentlemen you mentioned?

Here's one that listed in Phoenix about a month ago.  I think he's a bit high on the price considering it looks like no updates have been done.  I didn't see any mention of any factory accessories either.

There are several websites that let one search all of craigslist at once.  I used www.searchcraigslist.org

I checked the Craiglist bike out, and was surprised that it is still there.  It looks nice, but yes, there is no indication that any upgrades have been done.  Since it served as a 'display bike' for 10 years, I'm wondering what kind of shape the tank is in.  I also did some research, and found several on Cycletrader.  One was a 2000 for sale by a dealer.  It reportedly had all of the mods done and was being sold on consignment.  I think it was priced at about 9k.  I'll keep on looking, and thank you for your help!! 8)
