I want one.
« on: February 11, 2017, 12:36:39 PM »
So I remember back in 99 when the Super X was just introduced I sent away for information on the bike. I received it in the mail and I said one day I would buy one. Well at that time I didn't have a spare 18 grand laying around so it never happen. Fast forward to 2017 and now  I am ready to retire and the itch for a Super X has returned.

I see them all over the internet at different prices and I have found a few new ones still in the crate.
I found a 99 in a dealer ship in Lake Villa and a 2000 in Orlando. I have done a lot of research and am familiar with needed upgrades. The dealership is asking 6 grand for the 99 but they don't know if the upgrades were done. The 2000 is 4 grand but the oil light is on, they did check the level and have ridden it with no issues, but again they don't know about the upgrades.
I called Midnight Motorcycles and we talked about the needed upgrades which could run around 2 grand. So Im really having a hard time making a choice between the two.

What would you do?

Granted I'm not in person of either of these ....But heres my take.
I'd go for the one in the dealership.....
It may or may not need updating grades.... I can do them... If I discover them.
The one with the oil lite on...   If that sending unit is working correctly, its spun it's mains bearings....   Seen that before. Will need some higher dollar work.

I'm not sure why so many new prospected owners are leaning towards dealers for a purchase. Within this X community I'd suspect there are at least 6 X's for sale that are good riders. I know of 2 right within 40 miles of my home here in eastern nebraXa. Probably more.

Sorry I have issues with dealers. They don't know anything about our beautiful beasts. And often times will make up answers to sound like they ",know,"
Buying from within the community....   Well we are a small group, and we all want to be in good standing within the community most generally.
Just a quick example... Dave Lockhart/Ham LaForge quiet possibly have close to 10 X's for sale...   And they aren't going no where.... I've several top quality assesories from them thru the years...

That's my 2 cents

Thanks wytfut for the feedback.

I really like the 2000 but having the oil light on does give me concern and its at a dealership also. You mentioned that you know of other members that have some for sale. Is it possible you could put me in touch with them? I have search thru the sites classified section but could not find any for sale.

The dealership that has the 99 also has new 99 in the crate for 11 grand, Nielsen Powersports in Lake Villa Illinois.
They were the number 2 dealer signed up back in 99.

Well 11k plus (I don't know if you have any mechanical skills) another 3k for updates. Or a very thorough going thru at SuperXparts approx. 6k (it'll be a brand new bike when you get it back).  And the time issue costs: fuel tank full of OEM gasoline, and some very old tires, plus what ever else has been waiting thru time....  I think you see where I'm going with this...
Yes Brand new still in the crate is a great idea, but not promising to be the cost effective route, especially for a first time buyer that wants to ride it.  It will give you the warm fuzzy feeling that you are the first and only owner of it though. But you have to understand, they are now roughly 17 years old, ....
Im at the point if I were to buy a still in the crate, or an extreme low miles X (something less than 500).... I'd probably just store it and keep it dusted. No more outward cost, plus it can only go up in value. Surprisingly, there are a lot of them still out there.... well it surprises me.
Still its your money, and you may find exactly what you want for a perfect fit.... Each one of these are purchased obviously thru the owners own interpetation of what they want.  So I'm not lambasting your direction of purchase.... I just want you to be aware of what you are dealing with.... there is more to it than just shiney bits....
We have lost enthusiatic new owners due to "surprises". I'd like to see our community grow with new blood, and excitement....

I'd be more than happy to help line up some prospects..... my email is wytfut@windstream.net

Also post below that you are shopping for an X...   Year, color, and a rough budget....  a lot of people come to this site to read, but never post.... good exposure...

A couple of quick forgets....
that oil lite on if its working correctly means that the oil pressure is (I believe) less than 12 pounds.

Also in your post that you want to purchase..... include your milage desires. A lot of owners have more than one X.....  and of these, some of them have some low milage X's well within market value....

Thanks for the advice. I believe you are right about the new in the crate bike so I will steer away from that route.

I am looking to purchase a used 2000 with the green/oyster paint. I like to keep it under 10000 miles. I originally wanted a low vin number but I think now the higher vin numbers had some items fixed as explained in the tech video on this site.
My budget is $7000.00 and I will travel 250 miles.

I can be reached at electrictech@sbcglobal.net

Here's a G/O in FL.  Looks like it has the bigger oil cooler.  I don't know about any other updates.

I called them about that one and the oil light is on. They said the previous owner had filled it up over the level and they had to drain the oil and refill to proper level. After speaking with a couple of other EH owners the switch could be bad or the oil pressure is really low and the main bearings could be shot. That's why its for 4 grand. It was to far for me to take a chance on. I live in Chicago.
Thanks anyway.

Well I found a really well maintained 99 with the color scheme that I wanted. A big thank you goes out to wytfut as he put the word out to other members that he knew that I was looking.
This was a good way to purchase the bike as the history is well documented and recommended by another EH member. I cant wait to get the bike this Saturday and enjoy the ownership of such a fine looking motorcycle.
I doubt that my Harley will get much riding time this summer. This is the one bike that will stay in my possession and passed on to my son for him to enjoy.

Good for you.  What part of Chicago?  I'm in Joliet.

Had I realized you were in Chicago, I could have suggested one I know was for sale a while ago in LaGrange Park.  I don't know if he still has it.

There are a few of us in the Chi-town area.  I think we should plan a meet-up again.  It's been a while.
