Not sure whether this should be non-technical, but,

Why is the frame made from so many pieces? Factory capacity? Contouring?

I always thought it was because they were trying to as true to the original design as possible, and that's how they did it back in the day. But hey, that's just speculation from a guy who spends a lot of time in the winter sitting in the garage, drinking beer and staring at his bike. And the summer......
