Front brake caliper stay arm

I hit a bump and immediately noticed some noise from the fork area. Stopped to check it out.  I found the the caliber stay arm had come off. The nut must have left the scene long before the bump. But when I hit the bump the compression of fork allowed the stay arm to clear the tire and come off.
I don’t see a parts diagram for the nut.  It must have a lock washer and nut? Anybody know for sure. Thanks

Bobby,

Wow, definitely could have gone worse. The parts diagram shows a standard nut for the forward end of the link but calls it out as a lock nut. It's definitely supposed to be a locking nut and a plain washer. See photo. I don't see a washer on 0333  but, I wasn't the last one in here on this bike. I'm sure it's supposed to have one. Yours looks correct.

The aft end of the link simply threads into the caliper rod bracket (see picture below). As I'm sure you figured out, medium (blue) Loctite or other thread locking compound on that one.

Here it is with threads fixed. I’ll clean up the parts and check the wheel. Some blue loctite to the rescue.

Oh, I see you updated with more pictures. Looks like your threads survived. That's great news.


For most of my motorcycle life I've been lazy about blue loctite. These have forced me into the habit for two reasons: one is obviously to keep the screws in but, the other is corrosion protection. I recently discovered that a slathering of blue Loctite improves the chances of removing a screw at a sane torque, rather than having it corrode in place and becoming an unknown.

Is your caliper mounting bracket (to the axle) black or chrome? Just curious.

Two bolt attachment plus locating pin on the black directly behind fender bolts.

I was talking about the cast bracket that the two caliper screws attach to and goes down to the axle.

On the 2000s, some of those parts that were previously chrome started coming black. To save costs? Meet schedule? A little of both? I only recently discovered the headlight mounting bracket on my first bike is black and later serial numbers still got chrome. It seems to be random.

Honestly, the black caliper mounting bracket aged better. The chrome ones are hard to keep clean and brake dust pits the chrome. The black cleans right up.

1488 has the chrome bracket. I know powder coat loves to adhere to chrome.
I think there is a service notice here for all owners to clean and lubricate with a dry film lubricant. Possibly when the wheel is removed for service or a tire.
I believe the Heim joint sticks when dry and facilitates loosening the bolt.

Part # 5199-0541 Hex Lock Nut (3/8-16) and Part # 5299-0041 Washer (3/8")

Torque the Caliper Nut and Stud to 30 ft-lbs and the Caliper Rod Bracket to 35 ft-lbs

As long as you are in there, torque the Front Fender Screws to 35 ft-lbs   

It's a good habit to check the torque of all fasteners under the front fender every time you have the wheel off.

It’s back together for now but will go through the whole bike as riding season is ending here.

As per your photo it is a design flaw. The other side is chamfered leaving a couple of pitch of thread exposed and not fastened. Yes some blue loctite will aid holding it in place.

Wasnt that many years ago...
Roger Hodge had his front tire replaced at a shop here in NebraXi...
they forgot that nut.
came apart and shredded his brand new tire...
