2CoolOil
« on: September 28, 2012, 01:47:17 PM »
I was looking for an inexpensive way to help keep my bike cool while stopped in traffic. I came up with a very cheap and only slightly effective way to do so. Still, it's better than nothing.

I purchased these small computer fans on eBay for less than 5 bucks (for both plus including shipping). They are secured to the oil cooler with ordinary zip ties. I believe this cooler is made by Jeggs, and was the one Bobby Baldwin put on most of the EH's he worked on. Both my X's have these coolers.
I rigged a simple switch so that the fans would not be on in cooler weather. The fans put out less volume than I expected, yet some is still better than none when idling in traffic. I'll look into a little better fan vendor in my next cooler upgrade.

Here's a link to the cheap Chinese fans that I used:

Hmmm... Seems more trouble than what there worth. Does the fact that your blocking air flow while riding concern you? I'd bite the bullet and get rid of the Jegs and get a large NFP if you can find one or get an East Coast oil cooler. I think the capacity of a NFP with a good fan on it would be your best bet. A lot of Folks like the look of the smaller Atlantic E-H Cooler. Either one of those would probably do better than the Jegs... Although, I don't have any real hard data to back it up..

Jumper,
I don't think they are blocking flow significantly.  Even when they are turned off, the air flow across the blades spins them, like pinwheels! I can't imagine they would slow the air enough to allow overheating, and of course at low speeds there is some air flow present. I haven't yet installed oil temp gauges on either of my bikes, but plan to. Then I can get some real data.

What kind of temps should these bikes and oil be? I may need to add fans to mine since I live where it's so dang hot.

If I remember from the discussions years ago....
Our Bikes with no oil cooler, run extremely hot... like the new HD's with the OEM mapping..
somewheres in the vicinity of 280+, and depending on ambient temps....

This is far above recommended temps for most oils. Which is around 235.....
with the oil coolers and fan assist they stay right in that range.... even at idle in a hot enviroment.

I remember our first year at Sturgis with our X's, .... caught up in traffic. Temps in the 90's.... and both of our X's started to ping.....   nasty hot it was.....

Ok after I got home from a 40 mile ride from work yesterday at 65-70mph and 100+ degree temps my cylinders were at 200* and the crankcase was about 230*. So I guess as long as I stay out of traffic until I get a fan I should be ok. Thanks.
