Shutting off on freeway- GETTING WORSE!
« on: July 22, 2014, 09:05:55 PM »
I just had the bike gone through, and all updates done. I have probably 2,000 miles on since then (this season) and the bike has shut off on me several times when cruising on the freeway. When I pull the clutch in, the motor just dies. Has anybody else experienced this? I can't replicate it, but it has happened twice. I know of loose battery cables, and I will check that, but I doubt that it is that issue. If anybody has experienced similar symptoms, I would love to hear it.
Thanks!

UPDATE- Today I rode it for about a half of an hour with no problems. I stopped to do some work for about another 30 minutes and got back on it. It then continuously shut off, probably 10 times, for the next 15 minutes. I have experienced this in carbureted cars (vaporlock) when the gas boils from sitting on top of a hot intake manifold. I should note that the bike only dies when I let off the gas. So I assume that it is not a clog in the fuel lines or anything.

I have been told to look at:
- the crankshaft position sensor
- the fuel injection regulator

I will begin to dig into those over the next few days. Any other thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Double check the rubber cap on top of the throttle body... They crack and rot after a couple of years...

I've not experienced anything close to this, but I have heard bikes cutting out due to electrical grounding. Might be wise to pull the tank and look for any chaffing if you haven't already done so.

Any chance this is a fuel pressure issue? Not sure if there is an easy way to hook up a temporary pressure gauge but you might look into that. Alternatively, when the bike dies flip the run switch off an on. Since the pump runs for a second or two when the switch is turned on either the bike will start back up, or perhaps you will at least hear the pump running. If your on the highway you may not hear it, but hopefully this helps narrow it down.

Please keep us posted on your progress.

franknsr, thanks for the input. I am planning on picking up a fuel pressure tester, but for some reason I doubt that that is what is causing it. My gut reaction would be a loose ground, but who knows. It just seems odd that it happened when the bike was warm, but after it had been sitting. Perhaps it is a fuel pump issue?

My only experience with electric FP's are on cars and when they fail temperature isn't an issue, could be different for our bike, who knows.
FWIW I think your gut is right, check wiring and grounds.
Good luck and let us know what you find.

Chase your wiring! Make sure your not grounding out somewhere...

Starting to think it may be the Crank Position Sensor. I am going to dig in and try to figure out how to check that tonight.

Crankshaft Position Sensor resistance; 532 - 599 ohms at 68 degrees F.

Don't forget about your tune.  When you had the updates done, did that include an updated tune with SuperXtune?  Even with one of the newer tunes, some bikes just won't idle properly in closed loop mode.  I know of at least one that has to idle in open loop

The old 'roadside' test for the CPS is to cool it down (cool water) and try to fire it up.  If you just let it sit and cool by itself, it will take the better part of an hour before it will restart.  Then again, if it's a bad CPS, it won't usually fire off at ALL until it cools down.

When this happens, do you have fire at the plug?  These are coil-on-plug ignition systems...easy enough to test with a multi-meter.
