Bob, I don't want to sound like I'm being overly cautious but, that can be very risky with our conventional tube-type rims.
The center of a tubeless rim has a shoulder that our spoked rims don't have. What it does is keep the bead more or less seated if the tire loses pressure.
Just sealing the spoked rim, you could still hit a deep pothole, and the force could momentarily gap the bead from the rim. I mean--I hear ya'--tubless tires are a lot more convenient if they pick up a nail but, I personally wouldn't risk it. YMMV.
