Grounding
« on: May 14, 2017, 08:34:52 AM »
Last year I ordered the super flexible positive cable from Marty, and when I ordered it she said something about a ground cable so I ordered that as well. I threw the package aside and just opened it yesterday.

The ground cable is a flat braided steel band about 6" long. Anyone know if this is the one that goes between the frame and the engine by the shifter, or was this supposed to be another ground for the battery?

Yea, I should write this stuff down.

Frank,  I would think its for frame to case, but Im not sure.

I  recently broke a couple positive cables.  How are you going to route your new cable?  Mine was up through the backside coning through electric enslosure ecm area.  I am thinking of rerouting under the shock and in from side at rear where ground cable to battery is.  This way end isnt stressed as bad.

I'm sometimes a little bit over kill on some items...
for example, the battery cable issue, where I have ran over it, 90% of the time has been the positive. ...
No matter, I changed them both out.
I then ran heavy gauge ground wire (telephone braided grounds, insulated) from electrical box to case, and starter to case....

On the facebook page, Keith Nielsen, was going on about the case grounds and what/where they should be.....    I can't argue with him, as I'm no electrical engineer. I just put them where it looked best use, as a retired telephone linesman...

I also believe with out talking to Marty, that would be a case ground. ...

My last order of battery cables was for Chads Jennie....   and they were much different than the hi dollar limp ones....   They worked fine.... but was under the impression the hi dollar limp ones were no longer availible, or owners weren't interested in paying for them....

don't matter....   they do need good cables... and good grounds...

Bruce:

What routing have you seen used on most X bikes for positive?  It appears to me if you trim the top out of the battery cover over the top through the slot to side makes much more sense the a hard break down & through ecm box

Well, maybe I got it wrong... this cable seems more flexible but maybe it is just a new, stock kind of cable.
I removed the rear wheel and electronics cover and routed the new very similar to the old.
Installed the ground strap from the engine to frame and I'm sure this will address all my electrical issues. ;-)

Correction...
Starter to the frame....

Rich. I'm sure someone much smarter than I has figured ot a great route for the cables, but I went where OEM placed them originally.

I'm the guy that rerouted a puke pipetonthe rear tire and it kept blowing off the case outlet. Took me a while to figure out the swing arm was pinching it off...  (Devin's blu)
